I've been seeing (rather frequently) that ranged ADC type champs are buying Ravenous Hydra, and I have no idea what the point is. I assume they were just trolls but three times? The only reason people really buy it is for the unique abilities, and it doesn't seem awfully stat efficient either. And this was on normal, 5v5 PvP matches! Also, the people buying them seemed to be playing well and not at all trolly, other than their build. Please help me understand.

But in all truth, they probably just don't know enough about what the items do. It took me longer than I'd like to admit to find out how to have a half decent build...
Neither the passive or the active work if you're ranged, its basically a waste of gold for non-melees.
Because it has the highest amount of Lifesteal that can stack with BT I would guess. I would assume their build looks something like this.
I have ran this build before on Trist, and once on jinx during her free week last march. The AS steroids make up for the lack of AS in the build, and that much lifesteal can leave you out damaging the enemy bruisers while sustaining more. But against any kind of bursty ADC at all the build falls apart fast.
