Updated Client Switchover: Out with the Old, In with the New

Hey everyone,

Let's cut right to the chase, the AIR client (more recently called the legacy or old client) will officially be disabled and turned off on April 24th. For more information on what the updated client offers and why we’re making this change, check out this article. This means that if you try to launch the old client on the 24th, you will immediately be prompted to switch over to the new Updated Client. You’ll get a notification that looks like this:

http://i.imgur.com/mUT2GB5.png

We’ve been preparing for this on the backend for a long time, so there shouldn’t be too much you need to download when the switchover happens. Once everything is set, you should be able to login normally. We strongly encourage you to switch over starting now! That way if you do hit a problem we can get it resolved while the AIR client is still there as a back-up!

We know that with any change there is always a risk of some unforeseen bugs and errors that may crop up. The following issues are some of the most common that pop-up with their solutions:

NOTE: You may want to temporarily disabling your Firewall before switching over to the Updated Client, and re-enabling it the moment its finished. This should help the switchover go smoothly.

#Important notice regarding Rune Pages

We're investigating an issue with rune pages not saving correctly when re-arranged or have special characters in its name. While we work on a more permanent resolution, our tech team can help with a fix. Reach out to us in a support ticket if you're impacted.

#Why does the End of Game Stats screen take FOREVER to freakin' load?!

This might be due to the "Close Client During Game" option in the client. This option makes the client close out when you enter a game, which means after the game it has to completely reboot to start. Low Spec Mode should be enough to keep things running smoothly, so disable this option by entering the client, clicking the gear in the upper right hand corner, and unchecking the box.

#“I’ve tried the Updated Client before, and it was sooooo laggy”

We've made some massive changes to the Updated Client make it run as smoothly as possible, even on the proudest of potatoes. Enable Low Spec Mode if it isn’t on already. You can find out by clicking the gear in the upper right hand corner of the Updated Client and then click "Enable Low Spec Mode"

#"Patching Failed and we're not sure why Error: 004"

This error usually occurs when Operating System Permissions isn't set properly. Essentially, the patcher is trying to access files found on your hard drive, but it is being denied from doing so. Follow the steps in this guide to get this resolved!

#"Something's up with our servers and it's preventing you from patching" Error: 003

Occurs when the patcher isn't able to maintain a stable connection with our Patcher Servers. If the patcher loses connection to the server to get the necessary files, it will simply stop working. To get this resolved, make sure to complete all of the solutions in this guide.

If you have a problem that isn’t here or those solutions aren’t working, drop a comment below and we’ll be sure to respond and help you out! ^.^

You have got to be kidding me. How dumb can you be to give us this unfinished piece of garbage? What happened to implementing it when it was 100% finished?

Right now its buggy/laggy/slow/and missing features the old client had. A fucking toaster could run League, but now people like me, with actual fucking potatoes for computers are screwed, since there's at least a 6 second delay for every click. I've missed picks and bans because of this new client. I've gotten wait times from how slow champ select is. And dear god the hour long wait to get the after game results is god awful.

I might get downvoted to hell but this new client is complete shit compared to the old one, and it's had nearly an entire fucking year of development.

But hey one good thing about it is it now has replays and a sandbox mode.

I really feel bad for the Rioters that have to look through everyone complaining about the new client. I personally enjoy the new client but I understand and appreciate the frustration, but I think Riot gets the idea. ~~ inb4 downvote hell~~

The negativity on the boards is real..so many of yall comin here and trashing them for the new client. Its NEW and better in many ways and this is the first company who puts so much effort into their game years after creating it, yet yall give them crap for every little thing. They've told us they were switching months in advanced, they addressed every concern, they took our thoughts into consideration like with the item sets, but that still aint enough for some people on here. Yeah it was buggy when it first came out, i mean it was in beta so what u expect. Im running the new client on a 2011 macbook and it runs fine. And riot, great job on the new client, its visually 1000 times better than the old, also practice tool and replay have made league much more complete now. Ok rant over, catch yall on the rift.

I find it amusing when Riot specifically comes out with elaborate articles addressing things like this when we all know you know whats wrong with the client because you have testers that work for Riot. You know like the players know, that this client is, lets be real, piss-poor. It's even to the point where people CANNOT even play the game because of it. And I'm not just referring to people with toasters or low spec laptops. I've tested the alpha beta bs client on multiple desktops and laptops and it is uhhhh, well I strongly prefer the smoothness of the legacy client. The legacy client itself was actually just getting good. This is coming from someone who's played since the beginning. The legacy client was not always the best and I honestly can admit that it took years for the legacy client to even be what it is today. To just scrap it for some half-assed polished pos is bogus. I get it tho, deadlines and manpower. Why keep working on 2 clients when you can focus on one, It's clear the new client needs attention, that is why I'm guessing you are scrapping the obviously better optimized legacy client. But the reality is as the players, we have no real say and we do understand that you aren't concerned with us as much as you lead other people to believe. I've seen a real shift in company/player relationships since around Season 3/4. Bottom line is you're worried about your bottom line. Which is understandable because it is a free game so I appreciate what you do, I just wish you were more honest, straight up and transparent with your community. This is really starting to feel like a dictatorship. I no longer fall for the illusion that you really care about all of the community because you are definitely catering to e-sports and people with high-end computers. It's fine tho. All companies shift once they see that money, respect and attention coming in. League of Legends is the only MOBA like it so you pretty much have that going for you right now. Once that is factored out and LoL becomes stale and old, remember the reasons that happened were entirely your fault and not the fault of your loyal playerbase. I'm excited to see where League is going, it really has come a long way but again, work on your honesty because you've blatantly lied in the past and have done it here. Usually I would say I dont mind a company changing their mind about something but you basically don't even change your mind... You say one thing and do another knowing that we are just going to accept it. Thats Love.

P.S. Ignoring real issues by saying "Enable Low-Spec Mode" isn't fixing anything. The client is laggy, unresponsive, crashes, etc. BUT yall already know that lmao This has become a pointless conversation at this point as your responses have become predictable while offering no real solutions.

CrazFight 4/18/2017, 2:18:26 AM16 votes

Someone should keep statistics on how many people dodge during champ select when everyone is forced to go into new client, I have a feeling many people are gonna crash/be to laggy to do anything .

Krys Star4/18/2017, 9:22:15 PM16 votes

No. Stop. Unless the Item Set Tool is ready, you shouldn't be screwing the rest of us over by forcing your new suboptimal client onto us. You guys are always forcing things down our throat. How about taking a chill pill for once, and waiting until the new client in complete and ready to go? I do not want a 50% partial client. I want the full, complete deal.

Seriously, for once stop half assing everything in your career and learn to deliver finished projects at their utmost performance.

the new client is terrible. just cost me a series and now has me loot banned. been playing this game for years and im about to quit why put out a weaker client just for looks

Limid4/18/2017, 5:23:01 AM12 votes

Don't do it till you guys have actually fixed all the bugs, or at least the ones that make it so that you can get completely stuck and miss picking or banning a champ so you get a dodge over your head and lose 3- how ever much lp. legit just happened to me twice and i'm now writing this because i just lost 13 lp plus sitting in a 30min wait time.

BruhhIron4/18/2017, 2:48:56 AM11 votes

I'm putting a lot of faith into this new client. I play on a laptop.. had a lot of issues with it before.. I hope those "massive changes" really make a difference.

Partybringer4/18/2017, 2:35:11 AM11 votes

does this mean we get 10 man bans?

Stammer64/18/2017, 3:02:40 AM9 votes

Can you at least add a timer to the new client that shows you when your First Win of the Day is up? It currently only shows to the nearest hour, but that literally leaves a solid 90 minute window where it shows "1 hour to go!!" and I have no idea when it is. I don't have a ton of time to play so I legitimately plan around it. But I can't when it just shows me "2 hours to go!"

Hey Riot, I'm giving you my full trust now. Please do not fail my beloved potato.

Morning,

First, I understand the desire to switch over to the new client for the sake of being able to actually work on it. If people are not using it its hard to test things. Also having to update things that work with both clients is super annoying as a coder. So getting people off the old client is totally where you should be moving and I get that.

Second, as for item sets, yea I want them and I use them and it sucks they are not in the new client. I do however accept that in order to work on them its better to wait until your not coding for both clients as they are a feature and such.

Third, the lag issues associated with the new client. The visual nonsense and such that causes click delay and all of the "we are reaching super far to be cool" and making things break additions. This makes ranked play especially troublesome because users are missing picks/bans and other things. My computer is by no means a potato and I experience game lobby lag where the chat box doesn't load or the team members are invisible and all sorts of graphical glitches and such. Not being able to click on your ward skin or change your summoner spells happens around 20% of the time. This is pretty frustrating when you play ranked. I usually dodge cause its not worth the annoyance. -3lp has become the unfortunate norm. I unfortunately see no way around this until we are all on the new client and you guys have time to work things out. #hopeforthingstogetbetter

Now, for for my actual reason for posting. No I don't like the new client visually, but thats not enough of a reason to not play. My problem is that it actually doesn't work for me. I've sent in bug complaints recently and support tickets on multiple accounts cause well we all have them. The client was annoying at first but I tried forcing myself to get used to it. Now in doing so I started editing rune pages and was working with reordering them in the new dropdowns and renaming them. This new "feature" corrupts my rune pages and causes them to duplicate in the game lobby and makes them uneditable. This persists through closing the client and relaunching it. I'm currently able to play and manage rune pages via the legacy client but not in the new client. If I open it I can play, but I have no ability to edit pages or even tell which one I'm selecting. (accurately that is)

Again, I've sent in bug reports I've complained and in 4 days I just wont be able to play... So I'm venting... I've played this game for quite some time. I have multiple smurfs with all champs and all runes. I've spent plenty on this game over the years. Just wondering if the issue is being looked into. I can recreate this issue 100% of the time I go into the new client. It happens every time and has for weeks. I can't be the only player who OCD messes with rune pages and such to have caused this issue...

Screenshots, system data, eyes that can sift through code and figure it out for you if you don't have them. all things I can provide you with if needed. I'll be sitting here hoping you guys have a fix for this before you make us switch. (suggestion: don't make dropdowns for runepages in the collection screen. Or don't allow reordering or something. Check the unique identifiers for them and see if there is an issue with how they are called)

Anyways, I'm rambling now so I'll go.

Besides the fact I get a bit more lag everywhere than in the Legacy client, the only problem I have is that it takes me 5-10 min to connect to the end stats page after the game ends
