At the beginning of every season since season 2 we have what is called a soft reset. Your Rank and MMR are both compressed toward the average and you must play placements again to be replaced. The algorithm works as follows: (Season end MMR + 1200)/2 = season reset MMR. Your rank will be determined by your MMR after you play 10 placement matches.

Prior to season 3 we had what were called hard resets where everyone MMR was reduced or increased to exactly 1200 and ranks reset to nothing. This proved very chaotic with all the high level players being forced to once again play games in an elo range they clearly dominate and tended to create a bad experience at the beginning of the season which is why the hard resets were done away with.

If you choose to play ranked in the "off season" you can still acquire MMR and ranking although there is no possibility of end of season rewards for your gains. In addition, the first 50 lifetime ranked matches on an account see increased MMR gains and losses to more quickly place you in an appropriate skill range (In principle, in practice the system is pretty flawed, but that's neither here nor there) and the increased MMR gains from these first 50 lifetime matches make climbing much easier and quicker so if you have never played a ranked match it would be most advantageous to wait until the new season begins, otherwise any gains you make MMR wise will be reset according to the algorithm provided and reaching that same level of MMR will be more difficult after the reset since your bonus MMR gains have already started to be used. The first of your first 50 lifetime ranked matches provides the most bonus MMR (the first 10 games will obviously be placement matches) and this bonus tapers down for the next 49 games.

Hope this has helped. Good luck on the Rift mate.

Yes, it is true. Once Season 6 officially starts, everyone's rank will go through a soft reset.
