What were some of your misconceptions as a new player?

As the the tittle says what we're some of the things you believed as a new player that turned out to be totally wrong?

  1. I'll start with mine, so when I was new one of my friends was commenting on how items synergies with each other and with champions I should keep it that in mind when I'm building. I was like ok items synergies with each other and with champions and I went for about a month straight I thought the correct way to build ashe was item 3110 item 3022 item 3025 because you know she's an ice type and I need ice type items and since she has a bow and arrow I went item 3085 item 3035 for even more synergy... I can't believe I that's what I thought item and champion synergy was. (I'm not even gonna get into the details for my sunfire brand build...)

When I first started I thought it cost extra gold to buy each piece of an item, so I would save up all my gold and buy the item with a single purchase.

BOT LANE DOES NOT MEAN EVERY LANE THAT HAS BOTS IN IT

When I was new, I thought that if I saved up my gold during the game, I'd gain more IP when I finished, so I never bought anything. It took more games than I'd like to admit to figure it out...

I thought that the gold you earned in one game went over into the next so I saved up a bunch and was disappointed the next game I played.

I had no idea I was supposed to farm with Q when playing Veigar or Nasus.

I remember my first ever game was with KogMaw against beginner bots. I never bought anything and I thought that you were supposed to die a lot because of his passive.. i went like 0 and 28 against beginner bots....

I remember when I thought smite being able to be used on champions was super OP because I thought the damage it dealt to monsters was the same as the damage dealt to champions. I was like "1000 damage to ANYONE, on a minute Cooldown? BROKEN, OP!! MUST GET ON EVERYONE!!" Needless to say this didn't work out so well

As a new player, there were items that I thought were good that actually weren't good. Like I thought Runaan's Hurricane was good because it let you hit multiple things. Or Hextech Gunglade was good because it gave spell vamp and sustain.

I also thought that the ideal build on every champion was to either build full AD, AP, or tank. For marksmen, mages, assassins, and tanks, this isn't a big deal, but for bruisers this turned out to be really significant. I ended up having Udyr builds where I had full AD items or Shyvana builds where I build her either full tank or full AD (I can't remember which).

I thought because Master Yi went really fast with his ult he needed MS and AS. So I bought Berserker's Greaves. Many. Greaves. And then he was melee, so I figured he's squishy. Fix that? Buy Warmog's.

Like, never bought more than one boots on anyone else. Just Yi. lolol

Secret Butt Fun9/18/2015, 5:00:31 PM3 votes

I only played ADCs in the beginning, like Ashe and such.

I thought it was more effective to build straight attack speed and crit, so 40 minutes into the game, every build was like item 3087 item 3046 item 3172 item 3085 item 3006 or some variation of that.

If only I knew about Yasuo at the time, then I would have actually got away with it without looking like a total idiot.

I didn't realise that I had to stop autoattacking in order to last hit, so I just built attack speed on everyone to increse the chance of getting the final hit.

All im gonna say is i played my first match of league back when you could start games with any number of players in customs. I was the only champion. I died like 6 times. Poor Annie :C

That the "experienced players" actually knew what they were talking about when teaching this game. I had so many bad/hack teachers that I just stopped all together you are better off with someone who blame 1 players in a game of 9 for everything you did wrong. Just play the game and do the best you can don't listen to these "experienced players".

YCitizenSnipsY9/18/2015, 2:00:41 AM2 votes

When I first joined the game I built everyone AP because I though "ability power" makes their abilities stronger, and that "attack damage" was just for auto's. I had no idea about ad scaling.

DorkunedAuras9/18/2015, 2:22:22 AM2 votes

Not gonna lie, I learned about league by seeing a youtuber playing it, and I watched him for a good while before picking it up, so I knew what the roles were, what items did what (ish, i was no expert, but knew more than nothing), stuff like that. It was essentially learning the ropes. I then went in and played WW jungle (end of S3, back when you needed literally nothing to jungle warwick to lvl 6 and gank). I learned from that spot in the jungle and eventually started doing other things.

When I was a beginner, I thought that I could surprise the enemy by going into a bush between two of their turrets and waiting as Warwick. Ahri finally came into sight and I tried to turret dive... I thought for the longest time ever that the element of surprise was everything, no matter the score.

I built like 3item 1056 every game as ap champions because my friend told me to look for top builds on mobafire and I was looking at the wonky Elophant build that is above the actual mobafire build.

Gunslinger7449/18/2015, 11:13:26 AM2 votes

The first time I started League and the tutorial told me to buy a Longsword I expected Ashe to actually start wielding a sword. It took me a while to figure out that there was no "equip" function.

I used to play Teemo full attack speed, because his poison triggered every autoattack. Blissfully unaware of the meaning of AP scaling.

SavingPirateRyan9/18/2015, 5:06:04 PM2 votes

I thought ability power was the strength of your skills and attack damage was just the strength of your autoattacks. I mean that just makes sense right?

It Hertz When IP9/18/2015, 5:06:44 PM2 votes

Built item 3078 on every champion, because it looked like it had every stat in the game, so clearly it worked on every champion, right?

I thought I would get more refunds. item 3070

I decided to give league a try on a whim, without looking at any guides or videos and such. just playing ragnarok one day, came across Ash splash art on a random site browsing the interwebs. and with this knowledge this is what i thought.

-That every champ on free week stays free forever.

-None of the champions could talk(lawl), i felt like all i would hear would be gun shots and other audio effects but i never imagined that the champs would talk or interact with each other.

  • Everyone could hear what your champ would say idly when they are walking and such. i thought i was being annoying to other players thinking my champ was talking too much when in fact, they CAN'T hear your champ's quotes ie.

Sona "Accelerated movement i concur." "Adagio Summoner!""Accurate! like a metronome." Jinx "Jinx? Stands for Jinx!" Sejuani "I will rule the freljord!" And so on.... I spent an entire day trying to figure out how to mute my champion voice for everyone

  • Saved up all of my gold to buy item 3174 in one buy not knowing that i could BUILD INTO IT.

  • What use i would have with a item 3340...wtf is a ward?..i thought it was used to WARD off enemies/ghosts/demons which never happened..i only bought it because i saw my teammates buying it and i didn't wan't to feel out of the loop......

  • Thinking that i had vision EVERYWHERE on the map(Still did not understand the concept of wards..), so i would get surprised and scared that the enemy was able to waltz into my lane without me seeing them on the minimap beforehand. I assumed they were hacking....i was an idiot i know...

  • That Sona could walk faster than everyone because she could float.....

  • That there was a cap on the amount of bullets i could use while AA'ing with Jinx.......

  • Why non healer type champs like Morgana Annie Blitzcrank and the like were considered supports despite not having any form of heal in their abilities.

  • That Rito was the "God" within the lore. since i would see people going "Rito nerff plz".

  • Build item 3006x5 on EVERY champion for the attack speed alone because i didn't think that the dmg from the other items were important enough..and the the amount of gold they costed.....just no...

  • That Sona would actually play music during gameplay....

  • All summoners spells were useless because their horrendous cooldowns..

  • Thinking "Bot/Mid/Top/JG" were slang for anything BUT lane assignments....

  • Ashe Arrows would miss and bounce off because Pantheon /Braum are holding shields...(Zelda mode was activated)

  • that I could solo Barron because i could solo Dragon....im sure you know how that ended...

  • I wouldn't touch the river for my first few games because i thought that it was impossible...to walk on water.....

  • Not buying item 1038 item 3153 item 3072 on characters like Jinx Varus Vayne Graves because they aren't holding sword like weapons..

  • Hearing "Legendary!!" Dominating!! for the 1st time Meant that someone had killed the most minions...i never unlocked my camera soooooo i was not aware that the announcer was referring to "Most enemy champs killed"WITHOUT DYING..

Multiple Madred's Blood Razor's stacked. Soul Shroud also stacked, and well a bunch of shit involoving Philo Stone on champions who had no business owning a Philo Stone and that summoner 11 could be used on Champions. Also, the Surge was a good summoner spell on anyone, god I miss the old days.

That people tried in ranked matches. Boy, I couldn't have been more wrong.

stealthfox949/19/2015, 4:21:39 AM1 votes

Auto attacking was useless, last hitting wasn't important. Thinking Ap miss fortune was a good build since she has 2 AP scaling abilities. Not understanding why people built AD Trist because all of her abilities scaled of AD. Thinking kills where all that mattered.
