Why can't we gift people our own skins?

I know I'm not the only one with several skins for some champs. I have four Mundo skins including Corporate so I don't really use the rest. Why can't I give my extra skins to friends? We can already mystery gift skins and even pick a specific skin from the store to gift so why not your own?

because that is a lost revenue stream for Rito. Why would they want to do that?

Poptart Evelynn3/24/2015, 12:27:32 AM3 votes

This was discussed a long time ago around beta.

The main reason is hackers. Without any real reason to hacks accounts, hackers wont hack accounts. With the ability to steal skins it would increase the amount of hackers that want to hack accounts.

Yea, I couldn't resist underworlf TF when halloween rolled around. Now my high noon skin just sits there :'(

Also, when riot gave away free skins I got steel legion garen and now I don't see the reason in using rugged garen over it.... other than the fact I like rugged garens splash more. BUT BUT BUT steel legion is a legendary with a cool lightning sword animation!

When an acount is close to perma ban status, Mr.Greatness and his positive attitude is capable of having his cake and eat it too. I do not want the worst the community to stick around, being allowed to keep all their stuff.

Hijackers will be able to jack your skins that way. Unless they make it so you need a password for gifting etc, i think they should add something like a 4 digit code that you have to enter every time you mystery gift, lets say your account gets hijacked with RP on it, they wont just be able to gift em away. And maybe if they add gifting owned skins, use the same code to gifts those skins aswell, but i honnestly dont believe this will be anytime soon. maybe never.Gnar

Because Rito would lose money if this were implemented. I'm not hating on them at all, because it is completely reasonable that they wouldn't want to lose a crap ton of money if this were implemented. Cool idea though.

idoki3/23/2015, 9:16:37 PM2 votes

Because it will be possible for people to transfer skins between accounts which honestly will be horrible for the economic system of the game

Åron3/23/2015, 8:25:07 PM2 votes

Because Riot loses money. And we can't have that.

LadyRenly3/25/2015, 10:53:39 PM2 votes

Riot is a company first, and this just doesn't make any sense business-wise. It would be cool but completely understandable as to why it won't happen.

Aerothal3/24/2015, 5:52:25 AM1 votes

it rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again

As much as it sounds nice, you've got the issue with hackers like everyone else said, but you'd also end up with huge black market trading, people offering money via Paypal or whatever to trade for skins, as well as having a grey market of people trading skins between each other.

The only way it could work is if there were STRICT limitations on gifting skins, like having been friends for 6 months, skins cost less than a certain amount, you've owned the skin for x amount of time, etc. but even then, it's probably not worth it.

Perhaps if you open a Mystery Box, you have an hour to give the skin you just got to a friend, but otherwise it's a mess.

Yeah give it a reasonable RP price bounty and everything should be good.

~5-15% of the original skin's price.

5% for legendary+

15% for recolors etc.

Yea I agree, I think it's largely an account security thing. We already know Riot's security isn't the greatest with them being unable to protect against DDOS attacks for months on end making the game barely playable. These attacks affected other companies too of course, but they were able to get a handle on them far quicker.

If Riot opened up trading already owned skins I would predict a massive wave of outraged people with hacked accounts and all skins missing within a week. They are better off just giving as little reason as possible for people to hack accounts.

RpgDusky3/24/2015, 1:52:52 PM1 votes

Sounds like a simple thing to do but there is so many problems with trying to implement this feature. The black market would go nuts for this.

mycatbeatboxes3/25/2015, 9:47:40 PM1 votes

I really wish we could do that seeing as i have countless skins i hate and dont want! Unfortunately it would just cause so many issues that have already been said below.

Corvoo3/23/2015, 4:59:51 PM1 votes

I agree 100% I've wanted to gift skins I already own forever

Sukishoo3/26/2015, 10:43:48 PM1 votes

Yeah Riot would lose so much money, so not gonna happen.

WyvernEgg3/23/2015, 7:20:32 PM1 votes

also because people could just take turns using the skins

Space Bum3/23/2015, 9:06:14 PM1 votes

The logistics behind this are not simple. They would have to stop people from swapping the same skins back and forth.

Scrimshäw3/24/2015, 12:05:41 AM1 votes

How would giving someone a skin for no money make riotgame$ money?

bad arcade kitty3/24/2015, 12:06:46 AM1 votes

Why can't we gift people our own skins?

it even sounds painful

phirestarter3/24/2015, 12:23:41 AM1 votes

Because if we could, the first thing I would do is start a new account, and transfer over every single skin from my old account, so that I could get out of the hell which is bronze V and being matched over and over and over again with the SAME EXACT FULL GAME AFK TROLLS which RIOT DOES NOTHING ABOUT!

Drukyul3/24/2015, 1:26:53 AM1 votes

Aren't skins more expensive than the price you pay for a mystery gift? Letting people freely swap them after getting a "mystery" gift is essentially just letting people buy the skins they want for a lower price.

2 much sauuuce3/24/2015, 1:43:56 AM1 votes

I believe it has less to do with "lost revenue" and more to do with not screwing your account over in the event it is compromised.

If someone got into your account and gifted away your SGU I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be too happy about it.

You can have 0 RP on your account if you are really worried about getting screwed over from being hacked. Your skins, however, would be there and ripe for the taking.

Newb the Legend3/24/2015, 2:00:34 AM1 votes

What could happen is if somebody dislikes a mystery gift they buy they then can gift it to any-one of their eligible friends (one who already has the champ) or they can keep it themself

Llanite3/24/2015, 2:17:11 AM1 votes

Because it promotes the hacking of accounts who possess legacy skins.

Championship Riven was literally $500 before Riot banned all the skin code.
