Why doesn't GP drink rum like a real pirate instead of eating oranges???

He's a smart pirate, and doesn't want to die.
that's like saying pirates didn't stock up on fruit to stop scurvy fruit = makes you healthier rum = makes you die (get drunk and pass out in a fight? no thanks) I think its fine besides all the rum is gone, why is all the rum gone?
But doesnt it appeal to the pirate theme??
