How is this Possible?

Hello,

I just did my s5 placements (new level 30). I went 2-8, and ended up in... Silver 5? How does the placing system work? My theory is that I actually was doing well individually in the games I lost... For example, in my last placement match I went 17-6-5 as Irelia, but we lost. Any explanation to how placements work would be great. Thanks in advance!

They made placements more forgiving. Sure your stats may have helped, but usually you need to lose 9 or 10 games to end up in bronze these days.

Did you duo with a higher ranked player?

Pretty sure individual performance has nothing to do with your rank after placements (could be wrong but I am fairly certain this is the case). If you played last season, your previous season's MMR has an effect on where you are placed this season (AKA I had a plat/diamond MMR S4, went 2-8 in placements and got placed in gold 3 season 5).

If this is your first ranked experience, possibly your normals could have some effect on the initial MMR of the players you are facing in placements which would effect your elo but that is less certain.

Personal stats don't matter in terms of cs or kda for placements. however if you have a duo and there rank matters as well as your normal mmr for placements.

Your placement is affected by the rank of your opponents and your team. If you have a team with a lower rank than the enemy in one of your placement matches and you win, you have higher chances to get placed to a higher division, and vice versa. If both your team and the enemy team are in about the same division (let's say between silver IV and II) and you win, you will have a chance to get placed there. Your score in the game will not affect your placement in any way.

Your first placement depends mostly on wether your win or lose your first game as it draws a base line from there. If you lose your first game, next game you are matched against lower elo and you start " climbing" from there. So...If you were placed against lets said a bunch on Gold 5 on first game and won and then started to lose then your MMR will still end up high since it draw your base line so high and then you started to lose 15lp or so per game dropping you a few tiers.
