Off Meta picks. Do not doubt them

Story time.

In season 4 me and my friend both finished our ranked games I was placed in Bronze 4 and him in Bronze 5 (Bronze noob you dont know anything) yeah yeah anyways. me and my friend pretty much only played ranked games whenever we were on and only with each other.

We would duo Vel'Koz (Me) and Volibear (Him) bottom lane. needless to say almost every single pregame lobby we were raged at and called trolls. But regardless we would do this almost about 95% of games. The synergy of those to champions worked so well it was almost mind blowing. Voli has a really strong early game/mid game. which definitely caught people off guard (passive op). Volibears biggest downfall though is that any crowd control makes him almost useless. Well when you play bottom lane where more than half the time the supports come to you. Leona,Thresh,Blitz. (those were the most popular at the time) you make volibears life way easier. when Volibear would dive or get engaged on by their support he would just run pass the support and engage the adc (if they were in range, if not just go for the support) and toss them back to me where I could just full combo them and earn an easy kill.

we won our lane around 80% of the time and we had an 78% game win average whit this duo. by the end of the season me and my buddy had both successfully climbed out of bronze and into silver.

never doubt the strength of an off meta pick. and please share your stories of off meta picks if you have them!

My current off meta pick is taking Thresh and Blitzcrank top lane. I have had a really good run with them because people simply don't know how to go against those two in top lane when they are building damage and not support.

in S4 i had a smurf in low gold i went 9/0 with jungle annie and 11/1 with jungle fizz on (before the fizz changes)

also still playing elise ;O

-karma jungle: went 28/3/7 with 2 pentakills (hour-long game). rough early clear but it was fun. -zyra jungle: went 18/15/9 (not the best score ever but we won and I carried) -rengar mid: azir dc'd so I had to take his lane. ended up being 11/7/? at the end of the game. lost because our botlane were idiots lol. -sejuani support: this actually works well because of her HARD cc (and good peel). me and cait stomped lane. went 2/4/32 at the end of the game.

Where in the world do I start.

I've personally been doing a lot of two things: trying crazy shit in the jungle and trying champions I play in one role in another role.

Trying crazy shit in the jungle is something I've been doing since around Season 4, where basically everyone could jungle. While I haven't really taken champions that I normally play into the jungle, I have tried out free week champions out once or twice in their designated role, and then try them in the jungle.

I jungled once or twice with both Blitzcrank and Braum this way, and both were really fun. Both were doable only for the fact that Quill Coat and Spirit of the Ancient Golem were tuned so that you didn't need the greatest of clears to jungle as a tank, especially at the time.

Back in One-for-All I also tried jungle TF. It was terrible. I don't recommend it.

Then in Season 5, I also started doing some more crazy stuff. I tried full tank Fiddlesticks jungle. I tried Garen jungle. And both somehow worked at least a few times (in Fiddlesticks' case I literally have a 100% win ratio with this tank build). I also tried Malzahar jungle and Brand jungle. Malzahar didn't really work out for me, while Brand I got to work once out of two times I tried it.

Playing picks I normally play in their meta role in another role is less done for the sake of being off-meta and more done as an exercise to help me get better on the given champion by playing them in a different role. In the exercise, you take a champion you play in one lane (or jungle), and play them in a different lane (or jungle). I've adapted a some of my picks into another role, like taking some of my tank/bruiser junglers (ie. Nautilus, Skarner, and Rammus) into the top lane. As a matter of fact, I actually learned how to top lane this way. Back before Shyvana and Trundle were widely considered meta top laners in Season 4, I actually started playing them in the top lane because I had no top lane champions I enjoyed back then, and I didn't enjoy them as much as junglers.
