one thing thats kinda weird is how you can get skins/champions you already own. But other than that it is great. Got riot kayle, snow day gnar, fnatic gragas, corporate mundo. Thats just a few. loving these chests. prob wont do mystery gifts anymore XD

My point is, hextech is great for that occasional free skin or champ every now and then, but a TOTAL AND COMPLETE waste of money if you buy RP for boxes and keys. Just go buy the damn skins you want.

Restless Slumber1 votesIt's like two dollars for a chest and key. I think it's almost always worth it since it takes 3 of a shard to complete the skin. It's probably slightly worth or slightly not worth most of the time. I don't think it swings in one direction though.

No, I cannot tell him how to spend his money...but I can inform him the value of spending $50 on chests rather than buy the skins he was hoping to get from them outright.

And this is all a gamble. These can seriously pay off, but only if you're lucky. The total value is going to fluctuate based on what he gets and how much he appreciates the item for its personal value. That's simply subjective. if he prefers the RNG of boxes over flat out purchases then so be it. That enjoyment of the gamble may in itself hold value to him.
There is a concern this will turn out like Trion-levels of cash shop rng, but so far it seems to pay off for the consumer far more than Archeage ever did.

So really he spent 37+riot kayle which if priced would probably be around $47, add in the essences, possible keys, one of the skin is unbuyable right now, and yeah he got his money's worth. I'm sure people would love to get snow day gnar months after it was discontinued (for a whole year).

But there is an underlying value factor to this whole system that isnt explained. If you get a Gragas skin and you don't play Gragas at all, then that $7 skin is worthless to you. So you just wasted $7. Over the course of time, if you buy chests...sure, the monetary value of what you won may be equivalent or close to what you spent, but your personal value 100% of the time will always be less. Thats why it is more cost-efficient to just buy the champs/skins you want. Because for every 1 skin you won in the chest that you actually wanted, you got 5 that you have no interest in.

Tormentula1 votesI'm going by how much money I'd need to invest inorder to purchase said skin. For example, if I'm at 0RP, I wouldn't use 5, or 10 dollars to get enough RP in my account to afford corporate mundo, I'd need to invest 20 dollars inorder to have enough base RP.
a 975 champ I can't just invest enough money for 975 RP, I'd have to buy the 1350 for $10 inorder to have enough.
So if you're "just going to buy the skin" you're spending that much for it to begin with as you need to afford it in the first place.
I can't only put in 12.63 for corporate mundo, I can only put 10s or 20s to purchase rp, and which is going to be enough?
And while yes, investing 50 all at once makes the value cheaper, the problem is if you're only buying one of the skins you wanted with RP, you're spending more vs. individual value.

You get 7,200 RP for $50 US, so 2,650 RP is unaccounted for (but the OP did mention "that's just a few"). You could argue some of the value is in those skins being Legacy.
