I'm not sure exactly how the ranked system works or the series system works. I was in a series for silver 3, won one game then lost 2 in a row. I thought I'd fall way back down, but one victory later I qualified for another series already AND it granted me a free win.
I think it's because my mmr is higher so the game knows I deserve to be a higher rank than I currently am, so it makes it easier for me to climb the ladder. My guess is if you dropped all the way down to 50 LP then your mmr is lower than average for your rank and riot doesn't think your deserve to be the next rank up, but that's just a guess.
