Why play the game?

Why do you play the game? Today during a game in which we lost someone stopped caring about doing their best and just played selfishly and only did what he felt like doing instead of coordinating with the team. After game he said he didn't care about getting better and to just let him play the way he wants. I'm conflicted because we all want to play the way we want to but should we not play in a way that enforces teamwork? And if you don't care about improving then why even play the game at all? That's the only way you get better. It's the very definition of the word improve. So why do you play the game? Do you want to play with a team or just goof off? Do you care about improving and disciplining yourself? Or is this game just a way to pass the time? To me, the game is a lifestyle and art. I don't want to just throw paint at a wall and if I do I want every splatter to have meaning. All constructive opinions are welcome.

the moment we are not playing games because they are fun is the moment they stop being games. I have no interest in "disciplining and improving" myself in this game. It's a game. That I play for fun.

So I don't play ranked. I don't even play normals if I can avoid it. Too many people with something to say about how I play a game. I stick with ARAM or AI.

Another simple thing to remember: Every game has a winner and a loser. No matter how the game is played, no matter how hard everyone tries, or trolls. Every game has one winning team and one losing team. And you and everyone on your team can be doing your very best and still lose. The enemy team can be screwing around and not really trying, but still win.

Call plays, ask for teamwork. Play the game the way you want to play the game. Encourage people, offer advice. But do not call their reasons for playing into question. It's a game. It was designed to be something you do to pass the time. And that is how many people use it.

Just try to have fun, and don't waste time worrying about others in a game. You'll win some, and you'll lose some. Maybe a loss is directly another player's fault. Maybe it isn't. Just try to be a positive influence on others.

Why does someone need to get better?

I personally hate the trolls/afkers/ragers, and I agree with you that team work should be enforced one way or another.

But I disagree with the improving part. If someone doesn't want to improve, why should you let it bother you? If you get better, chances are you won't ever play with or against him ever again because you are improving and he isn't.

I try to play a little of both. I focus on having fun, but I also make sure I do not hinder our team and be as helpful as I can be. I personally do not mind if we win or lose as long as we have fun or it was a funny match. I understand not everybody's definition of fun is the same, but if you look hopefully you can find some positive aspect to focus on, or a way to make it more fun in your perspective. Best of luck to you in games more to your liking though.

Although: have you tried making a team of friends? Likeminded individuals seem to make the game more fun.

I play to have fun with friends. I also like to improve my own play as well as helping other people improve if they're looking for help. Honestly, sometimes it's more fun to help someone else than it is to be playing myself.

The two opinions already here illustrate the point I'm about to make perfectly: everyone is different, and has different motivations for playing. Personally, I play for the challenge. I only enjoy PvP in other games if there is meaningful measurement of skill to accompany it. But others, like the other two posters, don't agree, and that's okay. Like one of them already said, once you get good enough, you'll mostly play with people who want to improve. Ain't no reason you can't enjoy the game with all different kinds, as long as they are all playing nice.

I play to unwind after work and to have fun. I don't really care if I win or lose just as long as we are having fun. The minute someone starts ragin and being a dick I just mute them and report them and continue on my way
