It's called "Flavor of the Month". Whenever a change is made to the game that makes a particular champion especially strong, everyone and their grandma starts playing it to take advantage of it.
Orianna is currently the most popular mid-lanner, but she will be replaced when she gets nerfed, or someone else gets a buff.
