I was recently talking to someone and they said I have to ignore the rest of my team to advance in this game. I have to basically do everything to advance, without relying on a team at all. How is that possible? That makes no sense to me. What I am suppose to do with the enemy team pushes mid and it's just me vs 5?

I don't think they meant ignore your entire team all the time. I think they meant to ignore certain complaints.
Junglers not ganking, for example. 90% of the time its just rage. The other 10% its the powerfarming Nautilus or Shaco (whom I do want to strangle when I see them).
So basically you need to know when its useful advice (even if its submerged in a toxic spew) or when its just rage.
