Season’s Feedings, everyone!

Hey guys, I’m Riot Arie, and I do the social media things in NA Publishing. A week or so ago, I saw a thread asking “What has League given you?” and it got me thinking about how League made my holidays awesome last year.

Just a year ago, I moved out to Los Angeles alone, leaving behind both my friends and my family. It was right before the holidays, so things were starting to feel extra lonely as I watched everyone on social media excitedly talk about their upcoming plans. Then, something pretty cool happened: a few guys I played League of Legends with invited me over to share their holiday celebration with them. We spent the evening together eating, talking about the pre-season changes (remember when supports were just ward bots?), and playing video games late into the night. The whole experience really brought the feels on to see how video games can bring people together like that.

Some of my friends are traveling home for the holidays and finding that it doesn’t feel quite like home any more; others are living far away from their families and friends and won’t be able to go home to visit. But I’ve found that in either case, video games can help fill that gap -- either by connecting us to long-time friends who are far away, or by helping us make new ones nearby.

So now I want to hear your stories -- what games are you playing over the holidays, and who are you playing with?

A while back I met this girl through a friend of mine. She was a cute redhead and we had quite a few shared interests. My buddy was into her for a while, but they were too different and had almost nothing in common, so I could tell it was never going to work out. We added each other on LoL and talked there on a couple occasions, but it was only a month or two later that we ever actually met up in person and went on any dates. Once we got a little more serious and made our relationship status official, this guy started saying some pretty rude stuff about me, to the point where we're basically mortal foes now. But that's okay, because the hot ginger is my girlfriend, not his. So I'll be home for the holidays, playing video games with her.

After my parents split, my mom took my little brother and moved to a bigger city a few states away. I moved out on my own and I miss my little bro a good amount. Recently though we have found some common ground in League, so Im looking forward to spending my break from classes playing matches with him. It defiantly wont be like Christmas used to be but at least its way for us to do something and stay in touch. I can also get my Christmas shopping done by gifting him some mystery skins and rp. No need to pay for any shipping or postal fees is pretty awesome. I also hope to finish my Knights of the Old Republic campaign before school. It takes a surprising amount of my free time haha.

I am gonna play League with my brother and my cousins while discussing the new patch changes.

When my family has our Christmas party with relatives (at our house), me, my brother, and my cousins usually go back to my room at some point to play Super Smash Bros on the Wii. It's a great way for us to do something we all enjoy together. Smash Bros is pretty much a tradition among us now.

As I'm not flying home this year, I will spend all my Christmas holidays with playing video games. I plan on playing a lot of the Poro King mode, mostly with my friends and my cousin. I will also spend a lot of time playing World of Warcraft with my sister. We do this regulary since 2005 since we don't live near each other. So lengthy play and Skype sessions ahead! I also plan on going full ham on the Steam Winter Sale and already started with buying Don't Starve together and the next on my to buy list will be Civilization Beyond Earth.

Happy Holidays everyone! summoner 31

Best friend and I are playing Hammerwatch on Steam, other than that we just play what we usually do; KSP, chess, Minecraft, Loadout, etc.

Of course still playing LoL :P

Pokemon and Smash with my sister, and Minecraft with my best friend.

My brothers are both deployed literally on opposite ends of the world. One of them is in Turkey, the other is in Okinawa and soon Korea. I'm trying to get them into video games so that we can do more than just Skype, so far it's been a hassle to even get them into Steam. I'm certainly trying though, and it's a learning experience. If only they had time and patience for League, haha

Playing League with so many randoms every day, you're just bound to find SOMEONE to befriend. For example, a while back I was playing a normal game, nothing special, when our Support Annie added me after the game. Later that night when my friend and I were playing she suggested we get in a skype call with her and immediately we were plugged into this social group 6 states away. It was pretty interesting seeing as it was my first time ever encountering this, so we stuck around. I typically play with the group on a daily basis when I can, and I can't help but thank Riot for giving us this misnamed Friendship Maker. So either I'll be playing with them, my lovely (Persona Q, obvs), or smashing my brother to oblivion in Smash Bros. Wii U

My family likes to play a special game during the holiday season.

It's called "Who can get drunk the fastest".

Probably my friend will come over and with my brother and him we will be rocking metal and playing League and Minecraft till we start halucinating of the tiredness. xD

Since I moved away from my home state (for my then-girlfriend, now-fiancee), we've built a group of friends who come over weekly to play tabletop and roleplaying games with us.

This coming weekend is one of our two special game days - our Christmas party, of course - so I don't really know what all we'll be playing. I know there's going to be quite a few new games to try out (my fiancee just picked up Flame Wars, and a friend basically owned up to buying me Settlers of Catan), but there's no telling what it'll actually be until then.

Except, I'm pretty sure we'll play at least a few rounds of Cards Against Humanity.

Merxamers12/17/2014, 8:57:39 PM3 votes

i'll be trying to play some League with my brother over the break; i moved to a different state for work, so League is just about the only activity i can do with him anymore. I also just ordered Dragon Age: Inquisition, so i'll be trying that out, and also finding time to beat Darksiders (that friggin' glaive man, my skills are so bad lol)

Being able to talk to my best friend. He lives across the Country. We always laugh and joke around. It's so much fun on League.

League has kept me in contact with my only friend that I met in military tech school. We probably won't get to play any games during the holidays though because he just moved but usually we play League, Smite, Divinity: Original Sin or talk while sitting on league/skype trying to decide whether or not we actually want to play.

minnieheals12/17/2014, 11:43:46 PM2 votes

Most of my gaming will likely be in the evenings after festivities are over, but probably going to play my solid three games: WoW, LoL, and D3 over the holidays. My dad actually has a League account that he hasn't touched in over 4 years, but I want to try to teach him to play Diablo III at some point (if I can convince him to try).

My best friend moved two states over at the end of our freshman year of high school. We both love video games and try to stay connected through them. Sadly most of the games we would play online would get old real fast and we would talk to each other less and less. I was afraid we were drifting apart. Then I found League. After I got the hang of it I told him about it. After a while, he finally decided to play and he loves it. Almost every weekend we get on Skype and queue up in Team Builder. League has kept me in contact with my best friend and I couldn't be more thankful.

Crett12/18/2014, 8:14:06 AM2 votes

Video games are my optimal bonding medium; my best friends generally all played a game intensively with me at one point. League is high on the list for me; this game is part of our history, I tell you.

RoundPiplup12/18/2014, 12:29:55 AM2 votes

I'm going to play LoL and Smash. That is what Im going to play for Christmas vacation.

AthenasVendetta12/18/2014, 4:04:51 PM2 votes

This is the first holiday I have honestly had in five years... and spending it with family is awesome! My younger brother is going to bring my nephew down and I intend to be the bad, fun uncle. But, I am just happy that i am not alone, working, or away this Christmas. It would be a perfect Christmas if it would snow... However living in Texas its not likely but you never know...

Maybe good ole Saint Nick get try to do it for me?

Modessi12/18/2014, 10:44:23 AM2 votes

I've tried to get my sister into League recently, and she is actually liking it, told her to play Ashe as a beginner champion for her as we don't have much ADC Bot Lane on our friend circle of some guys I met up on the Internet. So I started playing support champions, so we have a lot of fun playing League. She also plays over at my mom's house since my dad and mom split so it's always fun to sit down for around one hour to have a great time playing League with my sister.

I work the holidays. Not an issue since I don't celebrate them. I also work weekends. Also not an issue since I'd rather be off during the week.

Be nice if events weren't always focused on those times though so I don't always have to rush them.

Caoil12/18/2014, 12:17:44 AM1 votes

No games this holiday season unfortunately. My parents don't approve of video games so I can't play while visiting them item 3070

My bro doesn't play league at all anymore :/

Spacesuit Spiff12/18/2014, 12:52:45 AM1 votes

What has league given me? Cynicism, mostly.

As for the holidays, I'm going to try to get caught up on my out-of-control Steam library, looking forward to picking up Rek'Sai when I'm back to school (and therefore real wifi)

When I joined the Marine Corps and got stationed across the country from my family, I was all like "this sucks." But surprisingly, a ton of guys from my unit and others that I met through training also play League, so we all hop on Curse Voice and play games and hang out. it doesn't really matter that between the five of us we are somewhere between 20 feet to 3000 miles apart from each other, when were all playing together its like were all in the same room and everyone has a great time.

My vast knowledge of the game has led me to being a meme maker of League content for the last 2 years for a Facebook page I made that's gathered 5.4k likes as of today. Very nice life and entertaining little hobby on the side of playing the game to my death.

I've greatly enjoyed how much it opened my eyes to strategies and ideas even just being a game. Trying to be objectively right about what's better or worst in general when there's 120 champions isn't exactly easy work.

I already had previous experience with Excel from school, but League definitely gave me a use for it again after years of nothing professional to make or reason to use it. Can't tell you how many times I've made a spreadsheet for an item vs another item, or just to see if a champion at early stages of the game would win versus another match-up, and countless minor details that may or may not even happen - just to give myself the reassurance of my odds in the event that I ever were in that scenario.

Wullf12/18/2014, 7:05:22 AM1 votes

Ahh, maaan. I envy you.

My friends stopped playing with me because of school, work or they just don't enjoy playing anymore. I have found a team but I am just a sub to them, so even if I enjoy playing with them it will lead nowhere. Problem is I don't like to play league alone.

I am thinking about playing EVE as it seems to be perfect for solo play and also for meeting interesting people. Though Black desert now has open beta so I might also look into that.

Lately it seems to me that new games aren't worth a penny, except few. Shadow of mordor was just dissapointment with interesting elements that quickly went repetitive and at the end of that short game you were actually glad for that lenght. Assassins creed Unity went and defeted my computer with 15fps on lowest graphic settings. Watch dogs was just a pure lie. Call of Duty andvanced warfare was as bad as any CoD after MW1.

But Evolve beta was great. Though after weekend of playing and gaining some level you started to get these league type of players flaming you for every little mistake. But anyways it was great feeling after 30 mins of getting your ass kicked by the monster to defeat him using everything you got.

Only games I really enjoyed in last few years were Wolfenstein and Bioshock infinite and maybe this new Game of thrones telltales game. Still waitng for Kingdome Come: Deliverance to be released. gunna be epic.

TL:DR: Lonely holiday for me.

I'm playing WoW with my wife(we've given it another try recentl;y and are enjoying duoing old content for mounts), HoTs probably with my brother at some point, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night with everyone who will watch(ie. I'll be streaming it). Aside from that... we'll see. I might give DA:I a second chance, but it wasn't very fun the first time so I dunno.

I quit LoL because of the update to leaverbuster(not because it punished me, still never been warned, but because I can't agree with it on a moral level and you guys aren't listening to feedback about it), but if there're any changes to it that make it agreeable I may come back and play LoL... not that I expect any major changes to happen a week before Christmas ;)

My older brother and his Fiance are coming over for the holidays for about a week and then just leaving us. I'll be playing LoL with him and my younger brother, as well as Super Smash Bros where I'm pretty sure my older brother's Fiance will hop in on that. We're also planning on playing DnD for the first time which will end no shorter than terribly. XD
