I think it would be REALLY cool if you automatically unlocked a champion icon after playing said champion 50 times, a different icon (same but like with a subtle silver border) after playing him 100 times, and another (with like a golden border) for 150 times. The colors of the borders could be really anything not necessarily silver and gold. It would make champion mains really happy I think.
It's been asked and begged for since the dawn of the game.
Pretty sure it's not going to happen.
If they ever release it, I would prolly go with Vayne.
I would love this more than anything, i want an ahri icon to use ALL the time i would absolutely LOVE this <3
This idea is glorious. 
I've always thought bonuses for maining a champion would be really cool, like a certain amount of games with a champ would unlock this icon, and if you get a certain amount of kills in one game you can get another icon that has a more fierce aspect to it, and if you get a high amount of assists frequently with a champion you could get a more supporty style icon. Idk i play Vi a lot and id love to get some form of an incentive. Also I think itd be really nice (itd be even more nice if this becomes a thing) to be able to change your icon in champ select, so for example with all the team builder icons, you can change it to match the role your playing, or if your playing as a fnatic skin you could get the fnatic icon.

Who the hell would vote no for something like this? This is such an awesome idea, that fact that you can use your favorite Champion as an Icon or even as a Border is freaking epic! Since they themselves (Riot) said that the summoners never existed now in the new lore, there's no need for that same old Gandalf-Old Wizard-Summoner border anymore.

Only problem I have is if they have the idea of buying it with RP only. IP would be fine, but I don't want it to turn into an RP buying fest for some people like myself. Besides that though, looks like a pretty good idea.

Why has Riot not implemented this yet? They must hate player happiness, especially after closing GD.

That would be cool if you had a special acheivements border or something, like a pentakill border plus that champ one played for a long time. That would show good dedication :D And this idea's great!

Apparently on the Chinese servers they have some chibi champion icons available, and they're still in the files for other servers but not usable. Lolking uses them for user avatars and such as well. It'd be pretty neat if they were enabled on other regions. Though a bunch of champions would be left out...

This has been requested for a while, first time i saw it, the icons were suggested as a reward for having all of the skins of a champion, another time, it was for having played a number of games with said champion (10 : Bronze Ryze icon, 50 : Silver Ryze icon, etc), i highly doubt they're going for it.
The most ideal implementation would be to receive the summoner icon after purchasing the champion. Refunding it would simply remove the icon from your inventory.

I'm all for it, but I would prefer that they be different than the champ select thumbnail.
As long as she's not banned I will always choose 
No champ I can think of that I would use, I've stuck with the golem icon since launch even through all the new additions. There really isn't a champ I resonate with that much in LoL, or in most games for that matter.
I wouldn't mind if that added this for others though.

border but I know they wouldn't be personalized but I still just imagine a blood like flow going around the border. But even if they could make personalized champ borders for each one that would be extremely tedious but amazing.
