Idea for laddering
Hey so I've been playing A LOT of solo queue recently (hit diamond last week woo) and I was looking at the laddering system and have found two major flaws. First, series are pointless and honestly terrible and most people think so. They just feel frustrating, they prevent you from climbing and they are annoying. Second, your actual numerical ranking in the tier virtually doesn't matter. There is nothing cool about being the #1 in your tier and I don't think anyone pays attention to it.
I think both of these flaws are born from one major flaw: divisons. Divisions make the ladder in your division irrelevant completely, as they are so small that you move up and down extremely quickly, and they force series into being. They really aren't helpful, and sure you can demarcate yourself by saying "im silver 1" or "I'm silver 3" but for me, saying "I was the top player in my tier" or "I was the #3 player in my tier" is a lot more interesting and it feels more rewarding as it directly provides competition between you and your fellow tiermates.
Personally, I doing away with divisions and instead large tier with like 500 points would be the ideal way to set it up. Hitting 500 would trigger your series and you would only play series to get into the next tier of play. Tiers would still be separated out with roughly 200-300 players per tier but there would no divisions in between. That way saying "I'm the number 1 player in my silver tier at 480 points" would actually matter and be interesting/accomplishing to say rather than "I'm silver 1".
To me, this would be a lot better (this is how starcraft 2 and challenger both work) for all players. It would more rewarding and remove series.
