Story Behind Your Name

So I'm kinda stealing the idea of CaptainMarvelous here and asking, not the story of your life, but the story of your name. We all have one, the pros did a video of how they got theres, now I'm kinda curious how you all got your names. Sir ArmaMalum and MackleDoge I'm calling you out especially to answer this please.

Hey all,

I got into steampunk a few years ago, starting with the music of a Seattle-area band called Abney Park. When I saw them in concert a few times I just showed up in plainclothes, but really got a kick out of the constumes everyone was wearing.

Later I started playing around with steampunk as a place to do some light hobby game design in my spare time, and came up with some airship captains and their backstories. There was the proper society lady with a hidden life. There was the guy who was constantly inventing crazy new technologies. A few others came along, and I was always able to come up with a name that felt right. The one that fought with me, though, was the ex-military captain who runs a really disciplined ship.

As I was playing around with some different scenarios/stories, I eventually came up with the idea of making that captain into my steampunk alter ego, at which point it was an easy choice. My middle name is Randolph, which totally fits a steampunk world, and I decided that he kept calling himself by his military rank, even after he left to start a career of piracy. Thus Lieutenant Randolph, shortened to LtRandolph. Since I came up with the name, I've assembled a full steampunk costume that I sometimes wear to Cons.

Started my PC gaming on a little gem known as... Warcraft 3! I was enthralled with Greek Mythology at the time, and Cerberus is by far my favorite Greek monster. Problem was, Cerberus was already taken. I immediately though of Cerbearus, a 3-headed bear instead of a dog! That has been my name ever since and not once has it been taken.

To get the ball rolling, I'll go first.

I started my PC gaming "life" by going as "Awesomepirates" on Roblox then "Awesompirates" then I went to Steam and just thought "a new community, a new alias" so this was during summer break and I had one of those mothers who kind of tried to educate us during the breaks and we went to museums all the time but one of the times we went there was an exhibit on Nikola Tesla and I saw this tesla coil and just thought it was so cool. The electricity thing also just kind of connected because I've always thought Ben Franklin was the coolest guy and he discovered electricity. When I got further into Steam I was always getting on the same servers and getting admin on the servers and on one of the servers we all started going by "SirInsertNameHere" And I've kinda just gone with that name. Now follow up with your stories :)

I thought that the idea of a cupcake-baited snap trap set to maim hungry little Teemos was marvelously dark and funny.

MackleDoge5/1/2014, 9:44:49 PM3 votes

My original League of Legends name was actually "SomeLamePun". That one came to being because I couldn't think of anything witty and I didn't expect to actually like and keep playing League (guess it doesn't hurt to be wrong every once in a while).

As you may be able to tell my name currently is MackleDoge. This name is slightly more interesting to tell the tale of. So, to start it is a combination of Macklemore and Doge and I made it my name because of the amusing quality and the fact that my group of friends really liked it. I have a dog and he's afraid of thunder, so we have a thunder shirt for him and also a winter coat. Well one day it was storming and in the winter, so to get him to go outside we had to put both the coat and the thunder shirt on him and he looked so ridiculous but also had a weird Macklemore sort of style going on, so I labeled him the MackleDoge. My friends and I had a good laugh about it and shared the various pictures of him back and forth and eventually one thing led to another and it became my name.

So yea.....I'm named after my dog.

Rhyto5/2/2014, 1:41:57 PM3 votes

When I began my MMO gaming years I was heavily influenced by TWGOK (The World God Only Knows) I used the ingame name KamiSama007 but growing into playing League of Legends I outgrew the name as I deemed it childish on my part and decided to make a name similar to Kirito from SAO (Sword Art Online) as my own kind of name in which I decided on Rhyto (Rai-to), it was similar in a way and I liked it and I just realized after coming back from Japan that my name means "Light" or as an example for those who played Final Fantasy XIII and the sequels, Lighting's Nickname is (Rai-to) So I found it amusing and this name is pretty much my dominant gmrtag currently.

Sir ArmaMalum5/1/2014, 9:09:54 PM2 votes

Was wondering when this would come up :P

To start I was 'ArmaMalum' first. I had just started Latin class in middle school and I wanted be all fancy with total understanding of the Latin language (I was playing WoW at the time). So I proceeded to think I was clever and broody at horribly batching a name literally translating to "Weapon of Malice". Later I learned the more appropriate (although probably still not exactly right) term was "ArmumMalos" "ArmumMali" with proper declension and gender, but I already had the first one on several games and characters at that point and it stuck.

The 'Sir" prefix was actually much more recent, and so far is only a LoL thing. A few of my friends had a ranked team going and most of them also had a "Sir" prefix to their name as a gag. I thought it was funny, but didn't even think about changing my own name until after our first league tournament almost this time last year. We weren't (and aren't) that good by any means, but I bet them if we did made it to the finals I would spend the earned RP to change my name to "Sir ArmaMalum". Needless to say we did, much to my surprise. Granted, we proceeded to get crushed horribly by the winning team (it was actually mostly my fault -_-) but nonetheless I had fun and learned a lot. As well as earned enough RP to keep my promise with a little left over. I have not once regretted that bet ever since.

It's from a Bruce Springsteen song. No, I'm not a 40 year old woman.

Flore5/3/2014, 11:51:51 AM2 votes

It's short for Florence...An online name I adopted with no real reasoning because I needed a tag as an admin on a facebook page, and didn't want to use my own name, and I thought being Florence was just quite ridiculous enough to work.

So now my mother mocks me by calling me Florence, Flo, Flore, or Puppy, because I hate my given name.

The floor jokes get pretty bad sometimes. Last week someone asked how their teammate died to a floor, and their teammate replied they had tripped.

Dax Ayrton5/3/2014, 4:50:59 AM2 votes

It's funny because "Dax Ayrton" is actually my name; it's on my birth certificate and everything. It's only that since it's so weird, everyone thinks I made it up.

Tyliear Depraw5/2/2014, 6:31:08 PM2 votes

my gamer tag is warped reality but when i made my league account it was taken, so i thought for a second and decided to scramble the letters in each word to make a name.

LovelySkylark5/4/2014, 7:44:37 AM1 votes

Mine is like an Alias to my name in a sense :P my initials are LS and Lovely Skylark works well with that. I use it for my art and pretty much everything. Its the name of my DeviantArt page, its also the name of my twitch and everything else! It was from a poem a friend of mine wrote a long time ago that I absolutely adored <3

My name followed me for awhile now from diffrent consoles to pc. As you can probally assume how I got this name since the name says itself but, in most of my gaming career ive been known for my outstanding reflexes when it comes down do dodging outplaying, any sort of ideal concept. Just sat in my room one day was like Deadly Reflexes because we all know reflexes tend to be dealy. ;) Kinda suprised no one had this name before me making this name original :D.

the story behind s0larphant0m. . . you had me backtracking all night lol. but i remeber now.

I was at a loss for a new username when i played fiesta because well, lets face it, my last username made people think i was a chick.(Aura)

It took me about a week but i finally came up with solar (taken in every game already) and pondered more. so i finally added phantom to the end of it. come to find out thats also taken in LoL so i replaced the o's with 0's.

Thinking about remaning my self taterbro now tho. someone called me it in tera cause im from idaho and its just stuck.

EMOFRATPARTY7/19/2014, 6:59:19 AM1 votes

#Threadsurrection

"EMO FRAT PARTY!!!" is the name of one of the first games I ever designed. I never completed anything beyond a mobile UI prototype (which isn't actually half-terrible!), but I still love it and have used it as my SN for a few years now.

Premise: A couple of emo kids try to get into a frat party but are turned down by some dude-bros at the main gate. Yes...gate, not door -- even though it's definitely a door. The emo kids get upset so they come back in force and attack the fraternity house.

From there, it's an objective-based action-RTS where you can select individual characters scattered across the map. When a character is not player-controlled, it acts as an AI. I had a ton of ideas for this game but that's the gist of it.

And yes, I like the current spelling better...would love those exclamation points, though.

Full Disclosure: I was a Sigma Nu at Arizona State University, so this is (in-part) drawn from experience.

Heyo, stumbled on this thread, hopefully I'm not toooooooo late to the party :/

My name was/is? my old xbox gamertag, back when I played Halo 3. The name itself comes from my stunning physique, being a skinny Asian kid and all :P

Tsiddique5/1/2014, 11:10:38 PM1 votes

The highschool I go to, most of my usernames I use to log into involve the initial of my first name and then my last name. Tanvir Siddique --> tsiddique.

xFierySnow5/2/2014, 1:12:09 PM1 votes

Let's see... When I used to play another MMO my name was xFrozenFlame because I liked the sound of it. I liked the wording as it was impossible IRL and always remembered seeing this the pic below.

frozen flame

When I hopped on LoL for the first time, tried the name but it was already taken. So I kinda made the complete opposite and ended up with xFierySnow.

The 'x' in my name also came from the previous MMO when names were taken, you just wanted yours to look unique. Had a '-' in game before that but coudn't but special characters so the 'x' sufficed.

Slovakattack5/2/2014, 2:10:51 PM1 votes

Mine is kinda boring. "Slovak" is similar to my last name, and I liked the phonetics.... I've sorta just kept it ever since. Recently, I've actually had people say to me that it's racist, but I really don't see how. Is there something I'm missing? I don't want to offend anyone... o,o

Manchette5/3/2014, 2:42:15 AM1 votes

When I thought of my username, I wanted something that would convey originality, but at the same time lack any number or symbol. When I picked the French word for a fencing glove worn on the duelist's sword-hand, I came to the realization that it was also a very silly word from an English perspective. As Manchette can either be seen as an elegant name or a funny, "Man-chete." Whenever I see my name now, I think of a manly machete swinging itself around.

kayakninja5/3/2014, 2:54:37 AM1 votes

Yeah, my story's kinda dumb. I was like 12 and I was trying to come up with a username for some lego site. I don't remember the conversation, but I was talking to my dad and basically ended up at "I like kayaks, and I like ninjas. I know, I'll be kayakninja!"

I am trying to get better at kayaking and live up to the name, but the nearest whitewater is 2 hours from my house or 6 from my college, so it's a bit tricky to get too much practice out on the river.

fewerbog5/3/2014, 5:18:23 AM1 votes

I got mine from randomizing my name on X box 360 and I found FewerBog and I liked it. =D

OblongOtter5/3/2014, 6:22:06 AM1 votes

I like alliteration, my sister's name starts with O, Otters-wa saikyou kawaii desu, I really like the word oblong. I had like two whole paragraphs of this laid out but I had to retype it, lol.

Best KhaZix Void5/3/2014, 7:29:11 AM1 votes

I love Kha'Zix, plain and simple, his kit is awesome and anything involving alien predators with huge reaping scythes for arms and clicky, growly voices just kind of clicks with me, but my name was created after a name change though.

Khazix Change is good, though, right?

duniceline5/3/2014, 2:23:41 PM1 votes

Well this is an old smurf account I made to play with some friends while they were new to the game and the name was a randomly generated name from my WoW days. My main account (on the OCE server) is XENO which when used as a prefix (i.e. xenophobe) means alien. I came up with the name when I was like 10 as my favorite book at the time was 'Ender's Game' by Orson Scott Card (it is a sci-fi) and my favorite video game was AvP2 (game, not movie, it is set in the time period of the Alien movies). In the squeal to Ender's Game the protagonist is considered the Xenocide (killer of aliens) for wiping out the only known alien race and the 'alien' from the Alien movie is called a Xenomorph (changing alien). I though the word looked cool so I stuck with it. If XENO was taken I used to use XENO19, the 19 coming from my old school username (which was generated with your first initial, the first four letters of your sirname and then given the lowest possible number while still being unique).

Lately I've been using Tenmujiin since XENO is almost always taken (even when a game has just been released) which is a slightly altered version of Genghis Khan's first name (Genghis Khan was his title, literally meaning great king) the real name is Tenmujin and the 2nd i was a typo i thought looked cool.

Hmmm... I guess it doesn't hurt to post something on this thread too. :)

Well my name RestingMagic I just randomly thought of in my head.

So basically I just stood there couldn't think of any name that sounded cool so I just went with this name since I never thought I wasn't going to like this game.

I actually getting a name change very soon. Hoply the name I come up with is going to be more than just a random name.
