5-10 Minute Social Attitude Survey for LoL players - looking into teamwork & behavior

I helped develop a survey that takes a look at social attitudes of summoners. It will be used for a research-based academic paper for a course that I'm enrolled in. I would greatly appreciate anyone taking 5-10 minutes to complete it, and I believe it will have some interesting implications for teamwork & behavior.

Survey factor #1, laziness and disinterest, most subjects are unwilling to participate LOL.

I can't describe the implications as that introduces bias, but I would be happy to follow up with you via email if you are interested.

You definitely don't have to take this survey - those who do are just people contributing to academic knowledge in general and we're very grateful to those who participate. I would be especially grateful because this is a project for a class that I love about a game that I love. Thanks.

Let me start off, I'm a teacher. I've taken courses in assessment, which you might benefit from if you are going to be doing things that require surveys or questionnaires. I'm not trying to stay your survey is bad either. I'm offering the suggestion that if you get the chance, take a course in assessment. It's worth it on a lot of levels.

My assessment of your survey. (Take it for what it's worth- which isn't a whole lot since I don't know all the particulars of your assignment)

The Values chart (pg 1/5) seems like it will generate a lot of confusion as the scenario your statements are referring to which might bias your results. For instance, we are receiving this from a gaming site so do these statements directly relate to gaming, real life, or generalized themes? Some additional instruction might help give users the incite they need to answer your questions with minimal confusion. You seem to be looking a teamwork as a whole, but from your post here I would have expected it to relate to team gaming or e-sports specifically.

Word choice is key to helping your target audience determine question meaning. Aroused for example... many meanings.. that will cause people to turn away from agreeing more than likely because of the perception of this word in relation to all things sexual.

Formatting issues... on Values Chart pg 2/5 you switch sides for agree and disagree. This could lead to trouble navigating your survey or mistakes creating inflated or deflated results depending on how closely your audience is reading your survey. Going back and forth causes your questions to change line location. This is also confusing for your users. Attention to detail when making something like this can make or break your results and participation.

Watch for redundancy in your questions too. Also, not everyone plays ranked LOL so you need to provide an option for those players taking this survey.

Thanks for all of your consideration - it's always great to see feedback and perspective on any project. Now that I've removed the link to the survey, I feel comfortable addressing a few things:

Values Chart: The statements are generalized and no mention of League of Legends was in this section. Additionally, in my initial post I stated that this is "a survey that takes a look at social attitudes of summoners." It does not mention anything about teamwork or attitude towards gaming.

HOWEVER, you're totally right. It would have been helpful for me to make that more clear in my initial post. It would not have been appropriate in the survey itself, though, because this is a survey designed for anyone to take - not just those who play League of Legends.

Word Choice: The questions are drawn from that academic paper "Horizontal and vertical dimensions of individualism and collectivism: a theoretical and measurement refinement," which has been cited hundreds of times since its publication in 1995. The word arousal actually merely means "strong reaction" - despite what associations people have. In order to keep the meaning of our credible scale, we kept the word the same.

Formatting: The switch is not an issue. It is to reduce bias. There is a phenomenon that occurs when people take likert scale surveys, such as this one, in which people grow accustomed to merely clicking through each statement. Because of this, they consider the statement less. In order to increase cognitive processing, the direction was switched. Just keeping you on your toes!

Other: Redundancy is the best way to ensure that you're measuring the exact thing that you want to be measuring: everyone is different, so different statements can mean different things. Or one statement may be difficult for someone to interpret. Introducing the same concept in various ways helps to capture what it is you're looking to understand.

Also, if you said that you are level 30 in League of Legends, the next question is a drop down asking your League. One of the options is "I do not play ranked."

I've taken a number of courses in which polling best practices and malpractices have been studied, but I am certainly new to the field. Thanks again for taking the survey and offering up suggestions/comments!

I'm glad you responded to my remarks. I definitely was looking at this more from an educators perspective. You certainly raise valid points on all critiques. Kudos for a well planned survey then! I hope you do well and find many future successes!
