New Galio and the future of Champion updates

With the reveal of the updated Galio I've seen a lot of reactions to it. I've seen people that love it and people that hate it, so I'm not sure what the general consensus about it is. For those that like new Galio I don't want to shoot you down. I know there's always a group that dislikes reworked champs and I must say I think this is the first update I dislike, and honestly I kind of hate it. Maybe it'll grow on me but that's not really my point with all this. My point is this-

Riot's update team is getting into some dangerous territory for future reworks.

Personally I've always been a fan of reworks. Sion I think the majority would agree Sion's rework was a huge success. Old Sion's kit was a complete mess and personally I thought his design was pretty ugly. Poppy Poppy also had some gameplay issues and I think her new look is more appealing than her old one. Taric Honestly they could've ruined his kit and I might have been okay with it simply because his visual update was completely amazing.

But the thing these reworks had in common is that these champs didn't really have a lot worth keeping. Sion's old kit made no sense whatsoever and I'm not sure anyone really cared to see his visuals go. Poppy sorta kept her theme but her kit had some glaring issues. Taric simply wasn't beautiful enough so that needed to be fixed.

But then we get to Galio, and here is the start of Riot's potential problems. Again if you like new Galio then that's fine, but I always thought old Galio had one of the coolest designs in league. I didn't play him much simply because I'm not a big fan of mage champs and he was admittedly a bit outdated. He also had a pretty unique playstyle that I don't think any other champ matched - a bulky mage that benefits from being in the middle of the fight. I also loved his voice and personality of a calm but righteous guardian. The only real issue I had with him is that he was showing his age, and that's what I was hoping his rework would do. And with that issue I bring up my question for Riot...

How does Riot plan to do big updates to champs that need small changes?

Most of Riot's updates so far have dealt with complete messes with outdated kits, art and pretty much everything else. But Riot is running out of the biggest offenders and I doubt they plan on slowing down with these updates. But now they're getting to the point where they have to deal with champions that are simply showing their age. So how does a team that's been dealing with huge updates adapt to champs that simply don't need a full overhaul?

Warwick That's where Warwick comes in. This update is what gave me hope for future updates and what gave me hope for Galio's update. The great thing about Warwick's update is that it barely changed him. He's still a werewolf (Riot would've had to try really hard to mess up his visuals) and if you look at his kit pretty much all of his skills are just modernized versions of his old skills (except his new E). Personally I think this is how most future reworks should look like. Keeping what works and losing what doesn't, and we're getting to the point where upcoming updates should have more stuff worth keeping.

But that's not the case with Galio. His new look doesn't look at all like old Galio outside of the fact that he's still a gargoyle - and even that's a stretch without the bat wings. From the trailer it seems his mage playstyle might be replaced with yet another tank (and no, ap scaling won't make him a mage). He doesn't even fly around anymore, he walks around more like a statue than a gargoyle. His personality looks like he's a cocky superhero that's looking to jump in and save the day and show off while doing it, as opposed to old Galio who was more of a silent protector.

If it turns out people like this Galio better then I guess that's just a shame for those of us that liked the old one. But my biggest request is that in the future Riot looks at coming reworks like they looked at Warwick - improve, don't replace.

I'm kind of bummed Galio lost pretty much everything except Q and his ult became a basic spell.

I'll be really bummed if his only viable build is full tank and not the AP-bruiserish build he uses right now.

When buying Iceborn Gauntlet he literally says "Punchy Spikes". This voiceover is worse than I thought it would be.

Edit: "Make me stronger purple zapping stick!" It got worse...

I'll tell you why.

  1. his old kit was just, very plain. All skillshot and a nunu ult with taunt. He kinda felt like velkoz in a way tbh, shooting your abilities one after another. Not to mention how boring his gameplay was, and that's coming from a mage main.
  2. thematic. Galio is supposed to be a mage counter (like how malphite is supposed to be an ad counter). Of course, a mage counter won't work without a gap closure, and of course it has to be a tanky-ish, thus his w.
  3. galio is STILL a very viable mage, his Q and E have a pretty high scaling, and ult too.
  4. you said his new kit is completely different, but that's not true! It's actually still mostly the same but everything is placed differently. His old passive is now scaled on some abilities, Q is the same, W still gives you a shield, E is new (need a gap closure so makes sense) and ult still a teamfight huge AoE burst, the taunt is moved to W active. It's just that his old kits got hugly buffed and placed differently.

Imo I think Riot did a successful job on the update

I agree with the sentiment of your post as I've been burned a few times by Riot, but...

Taric Honestly they could've ruined his kit and I might have been okay with it simply because his visual update was completely amazing.

I don't know about you, but I don't get a Gem Knight fibe from the new Taric, but I guess that was kinda the point.

But this isn't a Taric thread so w/e.

I also feel like Galio's old design was pretty fitting and unique, I was impressed how such an old champion had such good art (although admittedly it was his 2nd splash update).

That said, unfortunately Demacia's colour scheme and designs have changed, and Galio no longer fits. Personally I would have figured out something else than to essentially delete Galio. They didn't stay true to the champion at all, if Demacia didn't have wings in it's artwork/culture the may even have considered removing it from Galio... thats what this rework feels like to me.

And that voice over, i didn't play Galio all that much, but comparing the old VO on the wiki to the new one, yeah thats a pretty big personality change even though the voice itself is somewhat similar, the new one kinda has a charm even though he sounds like a dumb brute. Just compare how both the VOs say "justice", the new one is incredibly cheesy although probably used in a different context (whoa he says it again, now it's even more cheesy).

Point is, like with Taric, it'd be great for a new champ, but not at the expense of the old one.

That's where Warwick comes in. This update is what gave me hope for future updates and what gave me hope for Galio's update

Warwick was said that it'd be a simpler update as they just modernized him however it was said awhile back that Galio was gonna be a MAJOR update, their biggest yet... so it should have really been clear that he'd be getting a massive make over. They were pretty much just starting over.

I like it myself, but I do also enjoy many things about current Galio.

YOOOOO, You probably are getting a lot of shit about this. But I SEriously hate you for throwing Galio away and replacing him with the champ you are now calling Galio. Honestly a MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR BUMMER. I will miss galio forever. and his Hextech skin i had was my favorite and now he, this new atrox/ sion piece of shit you are calling galio isnt galio. I'm sorry but this is truly upsetting. THIS WAS NOT A rework. This ISNT GALIO. not ever close to the same champ. you deserve my honest opinion, and need to know how SAD I AM. eeewwwhhh. i Truly know nothing cam be done about it, because you made the choice to throw away a really FUN champ. especially in season 6-7 i have been having a blast. I HAVE NO interest in the new champ now named Galio. he doesnt even fly anymore, fuck you RIOT! i don't want to get into trouble sending this but I wanted you to know how SUCKY this is for people who actually liked galio....

No offence but "one of the best models in-game". For me he looked like the thing in men's pants.

Galio was always made to be a tank, so the fact that he's a tank doesn't bother me at all.

Riot said his personality is more joyful and not cocky
