MMR is Toxic and It Really Hurts My Feelings...

You can call this a rage post, and I'm sure this is a common complaint... but... MMR needs to change how it works!

I was demoted out of Gold TWICE! Not once... but TWICE! I get on and fight my damnedest but Ragers, Both AFK and Feeders, and trolls, both First time picks for... "Practice" and intentional stupid picks to provoke dodges, caused this... SEVERAL MATCHES IN A ROW both times!

So I lose... and get demoted the first time... Magical win streak to promo. Lose my promo after the 5th match. Out of promo win streak, and lose my promo again. The third time it's win streak all the way to gold.

In Gold again and it's going alright, get up to 59 LP and I'm lovin' it! Maybe I can make it to gold 3 before the end of the season. Bombarded with Ragers who are mad about stupid shit... Not getting there lane, bad plays, junglers dying because they decided to invade the enemy jungler and not ping...

10 4v5 matches in a row (last one became 3v5) and finally I am demoted back to silver for the second time... My failure is complete... At this point my spirit is broken. I question myself, why am I even playing if I can't even be a productive member of the community if all I do is fail and lose? I tell myself "NO! I need to keep going! BACK TO GOLD NO MATTER THE COST!" What happens? First match in silver win but I only get 13 LP very demotivating... But I look at my LP. 88 after the win, so another win and I'm in my promo! So I play the next match and win! 11 points... 1 away from 99... Throwing stuff at my screen but calm down and focus. One more for promo! Next silver match is a win and I'm in my promotion to gold and Feeling good!

First 2 matches are wins! Followed by two losses... Last match was a win and I'm back in gold but... for how long? How long before I lose 3 in a row after entering to get knocked back down so hard.

During all this I was talking to the people in the after match stat screen and realized that I was playing with silver 3's in my win streaks. Not to talk down anyone but these are people below my skill level and it showed in the match, again not down talking anyone it was simply a fact. Mistakes on there end snatched DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY! I talked to them, offering advice as they offered me condolences and there luck for my journey back to gold...

And now here I sit. Forced out of my division and ELO level because I can't fight people my own level in a 4v5 situation only to be forced fighting people below my own skill level sometimes causing 4v5 situations. There has to be a better way! There must be... other wise it's an endless cycle where people get there ELO dropped down and are now facing people they out class and creating uneven/unfair match situations.

I don't want to get demoted out of gold AGAIN! I mean... if it's a 5v5 slug match and we lose I understand but... getting demoted out of gold a 3rd time because of ragers and trolls... it breaks my spirit to think about it... which leads to the question that promoted this thread...

Is there a better way to handle MMR? To deal with Trolls and Ragers? or do we just have to focus on this endless vicious cycle of demotions and promotions and pretty much stagnate where we are till the end of the season?

Did you really say it hurts your feelings in the title? Sorry man, but no matter your opinion on ELO and MMR you're not going to get a particularly constructive conversation with an opening like that.

Now to cover just a few points...

  1. Everyone deals with ragers and trolls, from bronze 5 to diamond 1 and up.
  2. When taking point 1 into account one can see that the system is actually pretty fair.
  3. When taking point 1 into account and the fact that you are typically the only common factor across your games one can see that you are the part of this problem that must change in order to climb higher.

MMR is obviously not the best system to use, but as of yet a better one has yet to show it's face around here. If your issue with it is that you are constantly going up and down around a few divisions I unfortunately have to tell you that the MMR system has found where to put you.

It's not an exact position, but if you are neither climbing nor falling to any significant degree it will take a bit of self improvement to break the cycle. Once broken you will climb again until you hit your new stopping point, and you will require more improvement.

However, if you're the kind of person who will read this post the wrong way and find it insulting all I can say is welcome to solo queue and enjoy your stay.
