Why do we need blue essence for champion mastery?

Like.. if i grind enough games to get to mastery 7 i should be able to get it... it seems like another money whoring excuse from riot..

You can buy the Champ shards with IP, break down the shard, get blue essence. All 100% free.

It's an investment. You can get it all free, just by playing, but you have some limitation on choosing which particular champs that you want to be known for being particularly awesome at.

Not everything is meant to be unlocked by everyone. Gamers lately suddenly believe they should be able to access 100% of content 100% of the time, but that's just not how it is. Gotta make choices on what you'd like to have, rather than just having all of them immediately. And grinding out the 5100 IP needed to buy 3 shards to disenchant for the essence.. Is still less than grinding out one expensive champ.. And most people don't have a problem grinding out the IP for the champs they want, so why would the mastery be more upsetting?
