Are Auras out of the question? What about CC that gets stronger with assists or some build-able stat? Ruby sightstone increases max ward limit to 5 but costs more? more items that empower the lane ally more the more kills you have assisted them with?

Yeah, I hear this in all chat all the time. My presence is felt even if the score board doesn't reflect it. Gems.
St0rmln1 votesTrue. and if you are an exceptional Taric then the score does need to show it. My issue isn't that Supports can't hold their own or that they aren't strong enough, its that after you do all that, you don't have much ability to save a loosing team or to carry them to victory.

In and of myself? No. But as a support your biggest contribution is manipulating the environment into a favorable situation so that your teammates can capitalize on the current state of the game. I just played a game where I had a Malphite and Katarina try to wombo combo my ADC and my APC. Malphite got off his ultimate on my carries and as I saw his animation run towards me I flashed forward knowing full well that Kat would shunpo onto Malphite. Sure enough she did just that and she started up her death lotus. It lasted 0.5 seconds because she was bedazzled by my brilliance. My ADC started to run from Malphite but my APC, a Malzahar turned on Katarina and killed her. Then we chased down Malphite after my ADC got killed off by Malphite and Malzahar got a double kill out of the deal.
But if my Malzahar had done just as my ADC had done (who will not be named), things probably would have ended badly for all of us. But with my ability to make an opening my smart teammate capitalized on my forward thinking and turned a disastrous situation into a profitable situation. So I do need the help of others to do well but even if Malzahar turned tail and ran I would just treat this as a teachable moment and explain to them how to handle the situation if it ever comes up in future games.
