Shen Question

So I've played Shen since his 2010 release and I've always adapted to improve on building Shen to fulfill different roles. One thing I've noticed is a lot of builds have him with Attack Damage or Attack Speed marks/quints. I've checked and retested time and time again but overall Shen does more magic dmg, so why would builds (rune and mastery wise) building AD/AS? Yes it helps farm potential but wouldn't it seem MPen would be a better option for any role (tank,fighter, even support)

i believe the idea is to give him mixed damage since his abilities don't have that high of scaling the best thing to do would be to have mixed damage since that would mean instead of building 1 type of defense and stacking it the enemy would have to build some of both defenses which will over all reduce less damage than a full ap shen going against a team that has stacked mr
