why do i lose more IP then i gain

A few conditions:

Your MMR is lower than your currently rank suggests it should be. This lowers the amount you get for a win and raises the amount you lose for a loss to try and get you back to where you are supposed to be.
You were on Blue side instead of Red. Blue side gains less LP from a win and loses more from a loss while Red side gains more from a win and loses less LP if you lose because statistically you are more likely to lose on Red side than on Blue.
A combination of the two above.

Essentially because you lose more games than you win(over the last 100 or so games). It helps you get the rank you belong faster, which in this case is down. When you win over 50% of your games then you will gain more for a win than you lose for a loss.

Your LP gains are determined by the difference between your actually MMR and expected MMR ranges for your rank. If its lower than the expected value you lose more, if its higher you win more. Losing at 0LP also hurts LP gains since your MMR is still going down but you aren't losing LP.

I used to think this, but then this happened: won promos, got promoted.

Lost a game at 0LP. Won a game at 0Lp, got +25 Won a game at 25LP, got +18.

Don't quite understand how I go from +25 after a loss at 0LP (i.e. the game thinks I'm pretty considerably above my current level, +25 is a huge gain) to getting +18 on the very next match with no losses in between (I mean, after a win shouldn't my MMR be going up even more?).

Must be because I only have about 40-45 ranked games under my belt, so it fluctuates a lot. Still, very confusing at times.

Also before that, had the following sequence: 74LP Win - 97LP (+23) Win - 100LP promos Win Lose Lose - 80LP (1W, 2L = -20 LP, or 2W 2L = -17LP) Win - 97LP (+17).

That was really frustrating, at 97LP twice. also from being at 97LP the first time, going 3W - 2L to end up back at 97LP when I had gotten +23 LP right before that (thankfully, I went W-W-W after that to get promoted, then the first above). Overall, my LP gain and loss have been really weird and I've found it only a mix of frustrating and confusing.

I just wish Riot would be a lot more transparent... it's not like someone could game the system. You're only going to gain LP if you win and lose it if you lose, so it's always going to be better to win games (you also can't dodge promos, have other penalties for dodging, and don't even know your enemy's players or likely anyone's MMR to even decide to only play high reward games).
