Irelia, Swain, Gnar, Ekko, Trundle, even Poppy all feel like better options in my opinion.

The Yetii Rider1 votesThat's not how it works at all. It just so happened that in previous seasons, the meta didn't shift very dramatically between preseasons so the champs who were dominant at the beginning of the year stayed dominant year round.
It's not like Riot can pick a champion to make a skin for in August and have it out by November or December.
