A new player will have to get to level 322 in order to get all champions...

Current cost for all champions: 538,350 BE Current BE gain: 910 non milestone level average then 2120 average every 10 levels Only using champion shards to buy champs -- Only buying champs you have the shard for decreases the total cost by 40% to 323,010 BE. -- You will have lost the 20% disenchant BE from the shards you didn't disenchant adding 107,670 BE. -- Grand total of 430,680 BE. -- Using max BE gain (perfect capsule every capsule) you gain 13,380 BE every 10 levels 430,680/13,380x10=Level 322 (This would require you get 1 of each champion shard then only 6300 champs in capsules, which to say the least would be a statistical anomaly) -- Using average BE gain values above you gain on average 10,310 BE every 10 levels -- 430,680/10,310x10= Level 418 AVERAGE

This of course is assuming you get one shard for each champion in the 322/418 capsules you will have received. Choosing the order that you buy champs -- Buying champs from the store requires the full 583,350 -- Max BE gain: 538,350/13,380x10= Level 403 -- Average BE gain: 538,350/10,310x10= Level 523

Both of these scenarios do not take into account the acquisition of champion shards from boxes. TLDR: If you only get perfect rolls when you open capsules you can get all champions by level 322, if you get average rolls you can get all champions by level 418, if you only buy champions through the store and don't use shards it will take until level 403 with perfect rolls, or level 523 with average rolls.

Edit: See u/Dragongard 's full post or u/Jean-Hubert 's post to see how many games you'd need to play. Another Edit: So initially i calculated that mystery champions (3950 BE) as being more expensive than a discounted 6300 champ (3780 BE). However, I forgot the cost of the champion shard in the calculation (5040 BE total)! Note: 4800 champs cost (3840 BE) with the lost BE from the champion shard so that is still not the quickest way. So now if you are able to get 1 of each champion shard, and then only 6300 champs in capsules, and then only get the 6300 champs when the BE store is available with the mystery champion... This makes the new lowest level for all champs LEVEL 246! Thanks for the input everyone who mentioned this.

This is still absolutely insane. And it doesn't even take into account the new champions that come out...

doesn't count anything else BE will be used for either like mastery, emotes, chromas, etc.

This system SUCKKKKS right now and I'm already repelled from playing league outside of pbe now.

just dont... i always advice my friends to stay away from this game if they value time

i was thinking preseason would fix the problem with the game being so unfriendly to new players, it looks like it only made it worse...

Putting aside the slow rate of champion gain, the most frustrating thing for me in teaching my friend to play and watching her level up is that SO many things are level gated. Things that shouldn't be locked behind levels, in my opinion. Like the runes.

  • You can't even choose a generic rune page as a new player until level 8. Before that, you are automatically assigned whatever premade rune page Riot has assigned to your character.
  • After 8, you can choose from one of four premade rune pages, but you can't edit them in any way or create your own rune pages until level 11.
  • At 11, you can create a rune page and pick your keystone. But not the Inspiration path. That is locked until level 17. And you can only choose your keystone. All your other runes are automatically generated by whatever path you chose and are locked. You can't edit them until 13.
  • At 13, you can edit ALL the runes in your PRIMARY path. But the runes in your secondary path are still preassigned according to whatever path you chose and you can't change them until level 15.
  • At 15 you can finally completely edit your entire rune page. Except for the inspiration tree. Still can't use that either primary or secondary until level 17.

I'm half-expecting when my friend gets to level 17 (she's not there yet) to find out that you can finally choose Inspiration then, but you can't change they inspiration keystone until 19, any of the primary runes until 21, and any of the secondary runes until 23. It is beyond stupid that they lock the rune trees for so long. My friend isn't an expert at the game after three days or anything, but she already had favorite rune abilities after about six games. What would it have hurt to let her play around with runes and try out combinations in bot games? Locking them until levels 11-17? Come on! That's idiotic.

So, with this new system, you will need to be level 322 to get all the champions BE. However, how does that compare to the old system? How many games would you have to play to get all the champions, with IP? Well, the total cost of champions, in IP, is the same as the current BE, 538,350, so that's the number you need to reach. For simplicity sake, I'm going to say that you play 10 games a day, you win 5 and lose 5, and each game lasts approximately 25 minutes. Each victory would grant you 75.8 IP, with each loss granting you 51.125 IP.

Becuase numbers, these will be rounded to 76 and 51 IP. So, every ten games you would be earning 380 (Victory IP) + 255 (Loss IP) + 150 (first win o' the day), or 785 IP. Now, 538,350 / 785 is 717.8. It would take you 717.8 days, or 1.96 years, of playing ten games a day, to buy all the champions. The total number of games needed, 7,718.

So, while the new system seems crazy in how much you need to grind for all the champions, don't forget the old system was pretty much the same.

I started back in 2012 and finished off my roster just this week, though this was with about a 1 season break, I would say that if leveling wasn't capped when I started I'd be about level 3-400 so it's actually about the same.

Jayrett2 votes

the lowest level shown, is with the BEST possible rolls from chests with every single shard to further lower the cost.

Håppy5 votes

I have just shy of 3k games played and I have every champion except for a select few (which i could easily afford). It doesn't take you 7.7k games. This is including rune purchases, and I've never bought a champ with RP.

TheHappyReaperz4 votes

These were calculations regarding 25-minute games. For any games longer than that, you would have earned more IP. I also didn't take into account any IP boosters you might have, bonus IP weekends, party bonuses, and/or special events. So, it's entirely possible for you to get that in fewer games. My objective was merely to provide a somewhat reasonable approximation.

Håppy4 votes

I don't buy IP boosts, and I play solo almost religiously. It's an approximation, but a very very unreasonable approximation.

Cliticus2 votes

there have been several double IP weekends and multiple party boost weekends (ik you stated solo religiously just throwing it in there) and several ip boosts for game wins (same ones you can buy but for FREE).

on my first account i had 55 of the 110 champions at the time of me playing by season 2 (had started playing just after beta). it took me one more year at the end of season 3 to have aquired the remaining 55 plus the 8 new released champions with getting 5 rune pages (bought with rp) and all the runes needed. thats from 2009-2013 to complete the roster as it had been, get all my runes, for five VERY different pages plus troll runes and be left with EXACTLY 256 IP and 0 RP due to life.

also, how the hell have you played a thousand games a season.

I got around 100 IP Per Win in a 25min Game! and around 60-70 on a lose

LiL Bunnie FuFuu2 votes

You are massively underestimating the IP you 'got' from first win of the day. It was closer to 250-300, not 150. Heck, you could get 120 IP or so from just having a really good game even if it wasn't the first win of the day. Also you're ignoring the fact that you get about 30-50 BE per game with the new system (i.e. I played 13 straight games to get to lvl 32 and got ~650 BE. 50 BE per game). That is significantly less than what you got with IP.

I don't know where you're getting the awfully specific 75.8 IP figure from but as far as I can remember, that's lowballing it a little. Sure losses wouldn't give you much, but if you consistently won you could get 90 to well over 100 IP. New system is considerably worse imo.

edit: I saw your comment below. Assuming games last 25 minutes is not a good way to estimate IP returns lol. There's a reason why the time estimate for summoner's rift games is 30-45 minutes, not 25. Most games don't last 25 minutes or less.

TheHappyReaperz2 votes

While it may not have been such in previous seasons, in this current season, games are shorter, with the average game being approximately 25.5 minutes. That's why I used 25-minute games for my calculations.

Edit: Forgot to address the IP calculation. The most current and reliable source I could find for IP was the League of Legends wiki, which stated that IP was generated at: Wins: Approximately 18 IP + 2.312 IP per minute, Losses: Approximately 16 IP + 1.405 IP per minute. The wiki also stated the first win bonus being 150 IP. If you can find reliable information elsewhere that says differently from this, I'll redo my calculations.

How much IP did you have to grind before to get every champion anyway? Plus not everyone wants every champion.

Ive owned all champs for 3 years now, and have tons of IP just to buy a new one when it comes out.

ShinkoMinori4 votes

with IP party weekends you could easily farm 40k IP on the 3-5 days. Thery made like 3 or 4 of them, so basically 140k IP just from that, I got all my champs up until the 6300 mark with those. then just buying champ shards and rerolling for 5100 IP, it took me like 3 years to get all champs. With the new system it will take me 5-6 years to get all champs (counting the ones they release in the meantime)

So yeah it takes longer to get champs now and its a pain because you don't get to choose which ones you want coz you need the champ shard and blue essence to unlock them (otherwise its around 7 years if u get them repeated, even more if you disenchant them)

HongChongDong3 votes

The old system being bad doesn't excuse the new system being equally as bad, maybe even worse. As a player that has played for over 3 and a half years I'm nearly unaffected because I have just about every champion I want, but for newer players it'll definitely be an even harder grind. They either pay money to get champions they want or they could very well get bored with the game and quit.

SoryInAdvance18 votes

No, no, no. It is a free-to-play game, yes. But when you start taking away the ability to actually progress in the game without paying money, that's where it becomes a pay-to-win game. This is how games and companies die. I don't see how this isn't getting through your thick skull.

And you got your facts all wrong. (made a new acc to check the rewards) and it goes a little something like this(repeats itself over and over) lv 5: Caitlyn Champ Shard , 2880BE to unlock , Ward Skin lv 6: Xin Zhao Champ Shard disenchant 270BE unlock 810BE lv 7: 810BE lv 8: Janna Champ Shard disenchant 270BE unlock 810BE lv 9: 810BE

in total a new player will get 16 Champs unlocked till lv 29 (Ashe,Garen and Brand for free which are a level up reward for 2-4)

This game has gone from a journey of saving up for buying a new champion you want to play, to the grind of finding and climbing Mount Targon.

It's no longer an enjoyable game to play (for those still doing the climb or new players) and now caters (especially with the essence emporium) to the veterans (and even they've been pissed off by the essence emporium's rewards and honestly those rewards in the essence emporium are overpriced and not even very cool).

I would personally say that honestly this update has done a lot more to piss people off and has had a lot more confusion than necessary. The whole game has been changed by this. The way you level up and unlock champions and the Runes Reforged that has stuck the masteries and runes together. It was too much at once, and now it really just DOESN'T FEEL GOOD. Which is the point of any game to be honest... and the point of the complaints is that it doesn't feel good. Why would you play this game if you didn't for some reason or another enjoy it?

Again, climbing Mount Targon.

There's also a BE paradox. You don't gain BE but instead we give you champ shards (that you may or may not even want) and then you can dissenchant them for essence or upgrade them with the essence... that you don't have. So now you have to destroy the champ shards, or keep the ones that you really want... it's a real pain and seems a little dumb. Why not just give people a shit ton of BE, or allow people to unlock a champ every level from the bottom up.

Now you're lost on Mount Targon.

There was some theorized or perhaps leaked level up tree that I actually really hoped was going to be implemented that I saw in a video one time, with different options at level up. However I think it still included some sort of runes and masteries type stuff. Now BE has gone and mucked things all up.

it took me YEARS to freely obtain all champions in this game with the old system. right now its easier than it has ever been to get new champions, especially with champion shards which i WISH i had when i was first starting out the game back in 2012.

what people want is for all the champions to be free like they are in OW, but people forget that you paid $30($60 when it launched) for the game and those characters. you paid $0 to join league.

UB3R 1337 H4X2 votes

Well, yes, but if you wanted to buy all the characters in league it would cost 700$~.

The way I see it, there are three ways you can go about sating the complaints people have

-The DotA/OW method and make everything free from the get go, and by the way, sod off with your "league is free" bullshit because DotA is too

-The SMITE method and make a reasonably priced bundle of all the champions. Maybe not as cheap as it is in SMITE but having the option would be nice

-Make it so that unlocking things doesn't take forever (Yes, I'm aware the old system takes longer. No, that doesn't make this less shitty)

Will RIOT realistically do any of this? Fuck no. At the end of the day RIOT is a business, and businesses exist to make money. Nothing wrong with that.

But please don't sit there and tell me that RIOT's system, either the new one or the old one are built for the players, because they aren't, they're built to get people to crack and spend money for the things they want.

Tesla Effect4 votes

Yep, Riot basically screwed up their free to play community and people still defend the level up rewards. It's disgusting.

Doctor Fillgood4 votes

Seems to me like there's an important question that needs to be asked.

Is Riot actually just EA incorrectly spelled? Or are they trying to out-micro-transaction EA? Micro-transactions are all but directly tied to advancement now unless you never stop playing and you win ~80% of your games.

Quepha3 votes

Now calculate how much time that would take at a typical rate of play with first win of the days and like 3 additional games per day.

I think the old system was something like 5 years.

I can't believe this is what they were going to do and they didn't tell us about it. What a pain it is going to be to finish getting all the champs but it sucks even more for the noobs 400 level ups leveling to 30 sucked. League is getting to that point were it is hard to stay with the game. The game was awesome before the new rune and I am giving it time to see if the game still fits my taste but it doesn't look like it. Riot if I can ask, allow me to get blue essence every game so I can buy all champs. I am so Close. [sg-janna]

RacoonHunter3 votes

I would like to make a point here. I totally agree with the OP. I've been playing this game for a couple of years now, my wife just started playing after this update went live.. she's currently level 5. It's actually a LOT SLOWER to level up right now and to get champions in this new system than when I started playing a few years back. Her champion pool at level 5 of owned champions is actually a LOT less than what I have. She owns 3 champions: Brand, Caitlyn, and Garen.

When I started, by level 5 I was able to have about 4-5 champions with the IP of the "cheap" champions such as annie, ashe, etc. without having to spend real money. If I bought the welcome bundle, I could have of course more champions (8 champions and a leveling boost) than she currently has right now, but she also isn't able to get the champion she really wants (she is loving Nami right now) because the amount of essences she is receiving isn't matching up to speed. In fact, She hit level 5, got her first champion capsule and that's how she got caitlyn.. but it spent ALL her essences to unlock her (2.8k of the ones she got out of the capsule) .

now, I'm not going to do all the math, but in order to get the champion she really enjoys playing right now, Nami, she's not only suffering the fact that RNG will have to dictate when she gets the shard, but also how slow and tiny blue essences are currently coming.

The upcoming change to the first win of the day isn't going to help that much I fear as well. You go from 525 xp (great for us older players) to 400 and 25? essences. zoe will be out soon, and will cost 7.3k? essences on release.. at the current rate of gaining blue essences, as stated above, it will actually take LONGER and the play experience for new players like my wife, will more than likely cause them to not continue to play the game for long.

I really hope that riot is taking our concerns and not just focusing on "oh the math is right" because math may be right, but player experience is what they should care about. Loot crates work in games like Overwatch and heroes because the PLAY experience is what keeps people interested in playing. Right now, the play experience isn't there for new players.

They forgot to factor in the BE needed for new champs that will release by the time you can play enough games to get that much BE.

crescentx2 votes

Are you aware that this average means you are disenchanting every single shard you get from the capsules? so in other words, how are you supposed to keep the shards and get the BE? i mean, if you want to buy champs with the mere use of shards then it would take you double the time since you first need to disenchant in order to have currency to buy the champions using shards, doesn't it make it faster by just buying them from store? i mean, if you will disenchant only the repeated shards you will have to wait double the time, and without being able to choose the order in what you buy every champion, maybe im missing something? please enlight me
