Someone (high elo preferably) explain how this is possible?

Ok so I play Olaf (rank 6 with him) and I've ran two different builds. One I've had success with and the other not so much but I want to know why.

I run Strength of the Ages all the time with him. Runes and masteries are the same. It's the build that is different.

First build: item 1409 item 3748 item 3742 item 3065 item 3047 and item 3075 or item 3083 for final item.

This build normally gets me somewhere in the 5 to 7 kill range and I have been able to go off and carry a couple of games with scores like 21-4-9. However most games end with me somewhere around 7-7-5 and more often than not a loss.

Second Build: item 1401 item 2045 item 3190 item 3110 item 3047 and item 3075 or item 3026

This build normally gets me around 5-3-8. I have not carried a game by massive kills or anything but I win more often with this build. Also I'm netting about the same kills with fewer deaths and less damage.

Can someone who is a higher elo give me a bit of information as to why my second build is beating out my first build even though i have resistance in both and i have more damage in the first?

My guess would be vision and more team buffs/debuffs

Some players greatly underestimate the value of utility and vision. Aura items specifically may not seem greatly impactful but they provide a massive, massive amount of non-obvious power.

The second build provides very efficient buffs and debuffs for your team while Olaf has enough raw damage to remain an annoyance even without offensive items.

Nunu builds rather similar since he is largely valued for his buffs and debuffs (which let him enable his team) while he acts as a meatshield.

Nunu item 3111 or item 3047 item 1409 item 3110 item 3190 item 3512 item 3143

My guess: You build a ruby sightstone and vision is insanely undervalued in low elo.

Yes, I see you have trackers in the first build. 4 wards per base is better than 2 though.

Also, the second build has 2 team-auras: item 3110 item 3190 Making your squishies a lot better able to survive is again really valuable in an elo where everyone wants to just dive in and get kills.

Otherwise, yea, your first build looks like it has more tankiness and damage (your second build looks very support-esque, which Olaf is not. I don't expect the latter to work once you get up in elo, but it'd be great in silver/bronze (I have no idea what elo you are).

The vision from ruby and mr for the team from locket is more helpful in your ELO. Granted its helpful in every elo, but silvers are very prone to making mistakes where they go into unwarded area and get caught out by a burst mage, hence why those two items are saving your teammates a lot.

There are infinite variables to consider.

Who does it work against? How many dragon buffs did you have? How many levels ahead were you? What runes were they running? What was their build? What was their team comp?

I can ask you a billion other questions but I don't have the time.

Auras are OP

well just my 2 cents ... one the 1st build with stalkers blade you are trying to ward ( gj! ) but you dont have chilling smite/challenging smite making you less likely to cc or stay on target....

2nd build you get the chilling smite allowing you basically to exhaust your target and stick to them becoming more of a threat.

i dont see the need for ruby SS in 2nd build... and having auras and damage reduction items are strong and the fact you get a ga makes them have to kill you more then once *basically making it a 6 vs 5 *
