Question for Riot Designers from a Student Designer

What skills do you look for in a prospective Designer for a MOBA game like league? There's not really any level design to be done, so I'm not sure my experience with 3D toolsets would be very useful here, and there aren't any quests or missions to be made in this genre either. I understand there are different roles that Designers perform at riot (like Champion Design vs Balance), but those are things that I can't implement into a project.

I have experience in:

  • level design
  • quest/mission design
  • some basic scripting skills
  • competency using 3D tools

I'm also working on building up my overall programming knowledge. I know the programming would be useful but what else can I do? What can I actually work on? How do I go about getting experience in Design for MOBAs?

Have you checked their open positions? You can probably get your answer if you look through their position requirements. http://www.riotgames.com/careers

Yes, I have gone through their open positions as well as their internship description, but it doesn't really answer my question. For example, this is from one of the openings:

Design and develop new features from scratch for League of Legends or unannounced projects

Its a pretty vague description. I'm wondering what it is that I can do now, as a student, that will give me experience doing the same things that designers at Riot are doing now. Some kind of project I can work on, instead of just "learn to program."
