Is this other game serious?

Tsunami

So I was looking at recently released mmos on a different site and came across this. This picture is not the nami we know and love. This character is called "tsunami" from a game called magerealm. This character almost looks exactly like nami and even has her name likeness. Ive seen countless games that copy just like this. Is this allowed or can Rito do something? Then we have a "hero" called "green ranger" who, I kid you not, looks exactly like ashe to the T.

Here's a link to their heroes which include vayne, ashe, gragas, nami, ezreal, garen, and volibear. http://mage.gtarcade.com/heroes

I know they cant sue or anything simply because of a likeness, but cmon. some of these look like straight up copies. Im raging hard haha

This could be a fun little forum game. We can do the same thing, only more creative.

Lord Flagondrag - Disgraced prince of the isles of Dumas Sea. Stripped of his flag-bearing rights, he can usually be found drinking directly from his oversized flagon, which he throws at people in fits of rage. It's so heavy that it lodges into the ground as an anchor, which he can grapple with his oversized lance. Press R Thus - An unusually hard-to-please quality tester who died after being laid off from his job, which mostly consisted of him (R)ejecting taste samples. Now his unyielding standards of quality hunt mankind from beyond the grave. All are judged. Puppy - An irrepressible Golden Retriever puppy with a big hammer and a bad attitude. Teaming up against a poor little puppy is not allowed, though! Shame on you! Ah'Rhly? - A Cthonic lust demon with nine tails. Throws glowing orbs of pure lust. Unfortunately, it only works for about two seconds, because she's hideous to look at. She's always super-duper surprised when the charm wears off so soon. Alice Taur - The world's strongest minotaur. Happens to be female. Known to headbutt things. Also has some support utility in the form of a Distribute Milk AoE heal. Trendybeer - Carries a replica of a big sword from Soul Calibur everywhere, thinks he's cool, drinks PBR excessively. Worst hipster ever. MASHE - A Vietnam veteran with an old-school sense of humor and low mobility, compensated by lots of CC and vision. Voliboar - An armored boar. Brazilean - Basically Flava Flav, only a bit more partial to green and yellow. Furgot - When Kitty Cat Jones lost his ninth life, he came back as a giant crab. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember that he's not a cat anymore. If he manages to cough a hairball on you, then he can toss homing balls of kitty litter at you temporarily. Szechuani - Vegetarian chef who rides a cow. Makes and eats food so spicy she does damage over time as an aura with her breath. Being hit directly with a ball of spicy flavor does no less than stun all persons in an area. [Redacted: Fizz vairant]

Rice- A rice-obsessed middle-aged man who carts a huge sack of rice around with him wherever he goes and delights in sharing his love for rice with other people by throwing said food at them.

EDIT: Fryze would also be a good one. Same concept except with french fries

No seriously, they rip all their characters from different MOBAs. They have that other game called Hero Commander. Go check the heros if you know a bit about Blizzard's characters and Dota 2 characters. They have a fucking Windranger, a Drow Ranger, an Illidan, an Invoker, an Enchantress, a Queen of Pain, a Jaina/Crystal Maiden, a Lina... you get the idea. Blizzard, Valve, Riot Games, one of you needs to sue these fuckers so they stop making money with their shitty pay2win games that are total ripoffs.

A brilliant example here: That's their "Moon Knight" That's Luna from DotA

EDIT: By the way. Tsunami's first ability's icon is Nami's ult mirrored and flipped 90 degrees. Same for the bubble. This game man. PEOPLE PLAY IT. THEY GIVE MONEY TO THESE COPYCATS. Like... really?

Vayne is modeled after Batman and stereotypical image of a demon/vampire hunter, Gragas is a stereotypical image of Scottish and Volibear is ripped from His Dark Materal/The Golden Compass.

Come on, it's like saying game A ripped off from B because they both have warriors in armour.

GhostOfShrimpmas2 votes

Yes but they're literal copies. Same clothes, weapons, faces, bodies, hair, and ability icons.

Akaterina4 votes

It even has the same or very similar spell icons. Also.. lol at Sinister Fate... they just copied TF's old lore and changed the name.

SEKAI4 votes

To be a little fair, "Nami" simply stands for "Waves" in Japanese, and it's not the first time it's used as a name for a fictional character.

Nami in League is just a mermaid with more fish looking attributes, so in the end of the day, I don't think her image is that unique in the first place if you get what I mean here.

Let's be real, LoL's champ appearances are either straight up taken from another media or being stereotypical image of something, only about 5% of the game is actually original anyway. We get Egyptian gods, generic medieval warrior #100, generic samurai that controls wind, Sub Zero, Nine-tailed fox, generic mage #20000, literature references etc etc, really harping on "character copyright infringement" in the case of LoL really is just stretching a bit too darn far.

The only thing in common between both games is that, they are BOTH creatively bankrupted in the character design department, nothing to get mad about really.

Hard Penetrator1 votes

I generally think you are right but this ones here is a bit too much. Its like they copy paste splashes / skill icons etc. Do you see veigar using Firaga, bizzaga, reflect and focus?

Rozzeta1 votes

Yep, but stealing or tracing the art, and using it to make a profit. is indeed a crime if Riot has it copyrighted, and I'm sure they do. Still, this thing is pretty unlikely to hurt Riot's profits, and since they claim their copyrights are mostly a defensive measure, initiating a cease and desist procedure seems more expensive than it's worth it.

Starlight Knight3 votes

Nah, they' ain't copyin'. They're all twins that got jobs in different MMo's. That's my theory. :P

They have cooler names.

Green ranger and StrongBrew. so cool

Jazzy Jesus3 votes

The worst part of this, specifically "Tsunami", is not only that she looks exactly like Nami (weapon and all), but that the 1st three of her ability icons look almost EXACTLY like Nami's.

Really? They couldn't at least attempt to make new ability icons?

MrBuffington3 votes

lmfao they took all Nami's ability icons and rotated them 90 degrees. Totally different character

Trias0002 votes

Nami is just a mermaid, and her name means "wave". Yeah, the similarity is striking, but it's not like Rito invented her. Nearly every League of Legends character is actually copied, or at least based on mythology, literature, games and movies. On a similar note, Planescape:Torment makers could sue Riot for copying Ignus into Brand.

[edit] Although they did copy even Ezreal's icons. So this might actually fit the definition of plagiarism.

Rozzeta1 votes

The concept is not new to anyone, and anyone is perfectly free to create their own mermaid character. And I repeat, their own. Except for the colour and the eyes, this character is a direct copy of LoL Nami art-wise. Every single detail that makes the character Nami, like the crown, the lance/staff, the protections on the sides, even the weird way the abdomen makes it seem she's just inside a costume with the zipper low - instead of the more traditional seashell bikini- is replicated exactly in the character Tsunami. Not to mention the Icons.

RainsfordII2 votes

I know a lot of you are saying they probably wouldn't win a lawsuit or wouldn't go for one due to how many copies there are out there. But if they were going to win one, I bet their best chances would be this game. I am sure any one of you here could come up with your own original take on a mermaid or a dwarf, or an archer. Its so very sad. =(

TheRainInSpain1 votes

What does Rito have to gain from a lawsuit against this previously unknown company? Rito would be paying out the ass in legal fees to hamper a company one thousandth the size and profitability of Rito. It's like Microsoft suing a mom and pop store in China for using the term "Windows Operating System" despite the store being a Glass Window Cleaning Supply store. Utterly ridiculous to even think about suing.

Now if this company was Rito size ... yeah, Rito would sue the living daylights out of them.

My favorite is StrongBrew. This is definitely bad, but not as bad as that crappy phone game that got some recognition a week or two ago. There were names like "Jarven".

Smtie Sun Wkong vs Wukong

Nareik Yukiboshi8 votes

sun wukong and wukong are based on the character Son Wukong from the chinese story that i still want to read, no big deal...they aren't copies of each other, but rather characters based on the same sorce just as (Son) Goku from DBZ and Infernape from Pokemon is as well...as i have not read the story or know much other then the monkey character and the pig character, i could not tell you know much is original to each...but they all have an extending rod (sexual joke aside), a nimbus, and a tail as is much more apparent on Goku as monkeys usually have tails...but i have heard him referd to as both Son Wukong and Son Goku...journey to the east was the name? and those are just refences i know off the top of my head

on a side note...no one cares about smite we know all their characters are based off the different gods of different relegions and mythologies and the like

gl0hs0zgf5 votes

Sun Wukong is the Chinese way of saying it (the proper way) while Son Goku is the Japanese way. Yes, he is the main character of the popular Chinese story, Journey to the East. League's Wukong's decoy is a reference to one of myth Wukong's ability to pull off a hair and transform it into whatever he wants, often into a clone (though in the myths that clone can move and fight and won't die until Wukong recalls him or dies, but that's a bit OP in a game like league). League Wukong's passive might also refer to the fact that myth Wukong was made from a giant stone pillar.

Jubbinaut2 votes

It's Journey to the West.

Not only are those characters based on Sun Wukong, but Dragon Ball (not Z, the first one) is roughly based on the story. More recently, the game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West was also roughly based on it.

Mmk, alright, uhuh, sure it's not a copy. Why is BS like this not shut down again? Wait, lemmie guess, it's made in China?

TheRainInSpain1 votes

Too small or too many. Do you honestly care about the one man band in Egypt called "Maroon 5", whose name is a reference to being literally marooned five times? What about all the other people in the world with your first name? Gonna sue them too?

WTF you're all over this thread trying to back up a clear rip-off. Are you kidding with me? It's a 100% rip off and unless you're blind you know it. Why defend this blatantly stolen crap?

56552559_DEL1 votes

First off, to the people constantly calling this an "MMO", its NOT an MMO, LoL is a MOBA. Second, companies rip off of other companies all the time. For instance, LoL is a rip off of DOTA and then you had HOTS come out after LoL. So its not like LoL is getting the short end of the stick here. Yes they are using the likeness of some league champs and whatnot, but if Riot hasnt gone after them, then they obviously are not worried about it or they cant do anything about it legally.

TheRainInSpain1 votes

League is a MMO. Because the term is Massively Multiplayer Online (game). The term refers to an online game that supports a lot of people at the same time. What other massive, multiplayer, online games exist?

Mario Kart 8 The Sims Online Guild Wars 2 Runescape SMITE AOE Online Planetside Destiny IVAO Second Life

What you're looking for is probably MMORPG, or Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. League of Legends is a MMOBA, or Massively Multiplayer Online Battle Arena.

56552559_DEL1 votes

Uhhn no.

A MOBA is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. That is what LoL is classified as.

TheRainInSpain1 votes

A MOBA is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. Sure.

League is a Massively Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. It's an MMO BA. Or MMOBA. Whatever way you want to call it, but League isn't some tiny ass game with under a thousand players across its servers. It's MASSIVE. It's MULTIPLAYER. It's ONLINE. It's an MMO. And also a Battle Arena. MMOBA.

Armada Online is a MOBA. They have under two hundred people at any one time. They are not MASSIVE. But it is still a MOBA (to some degree). But League. League has millions of people. That's grounds for being MASSIVE. The lower bounds of an MMO is some one hundred thousand people. Is "millions of people" smaller than a cool 100k?

There's this one MMORPG, been around since 2003, uses a an almost direct copy of the logo of the old Wing Commander games. In 2008 or so, the players of said game rallied around the prospect of suing Cloud Imperium Gaming, the owner of the Wing Commander series, on grounds they were copying the game's logo when they unveiled Star Citizen. Even the developers and administrators of said game were pushing forward the concept of suing CIG. From what I understood, CIG just laughed at them for trying to sue the company who owns the logo for "copying" the actual copycat. As for a counter lawsuit, CIG balked at the idea. Why bother suing an MMORPG who has less than 500 customers yet has been around for 10+ years, and the trends say their customer base drops 10%+ of its net customers each year (eg 2030 they'll have a customer base of 100 with conservative figures).

Why expend that much effort when you could twiddle your thumbs for a couple years and all the work is done for you?

Even the skill icons are nearly identical. This is terrible.

RainsfordII1 votes

at this point they might as well just copy a riot artwork, crop it a bit, reverse the image, and use it. Because I could instantly tell that was nami without even clicking on the website.
