This "Aren't you to old to be playing video games?" mentality

I don't understand why so many people have this mentality. So many times I hear these 12 year olds saying stuff like "Aren't you like 20? Go get a job and life" or something along those lines. Do they not understand that the people making the games they are playing are between the ages of 20-50 and I'm sure there are some over 50. If people get to old to play games then you must think they can get to old to make them. You are never to old to play game or watch cartoons. If you are 30 and like watching Spongebob and playing WoW then enjoy them and have no shame.

Aren't those people too young to be deciding how others should be making decisions ? =o

I didn't realize that was still actually a mentality people had. My generation saw early nintendo consoles, the original playstation, the creation of the xbox, the rise and fall of sega consoles, and so much more beyond that. I don't see how people think that once you hit a certain age gaming isn't something people can do any longer. It's not like a job takes up a whole lot more time than school does for kids.

It's like they think that as soon as you hit drinking age you instantly decide you now dislike gaming and have no interest in it any longer. Completely ridiculous.

I'm 40 and I've been playing league since 2012. I was raised in the video game era. I owned the first Nintendo console, the Sega, the Playstation 1, etc. Then I bought a PC and never stopped gaming. You don't stop having fun because you get older, you get older WHEN you stop having fun. I plan on having fun and gaming till I die.

Funny thing is that the people around 16-25 are the one keeping this game alive since are the ones that normally work and have some form of income to buy things on the game.

Hey first off do not listen to those kids they are dumb, second I am 16 idc how old you are or who you are do whatever you want with your life it is yours to control, these kids just want to have an excuse(If they lose to you they might say"At least im not a man wasting my life playing a dumb video game") First off they are wasting their life to, and they don't like losing to peopld older then them but otherwise it gets annoying, and I have insulted it to but now I look back and think I was being dumb do what you want have fun.

I just turned 30 and video games is what I do every single day in my free time. These young kids forget that people my age, grew up on video games. We were the first generation to play video games religiously. So of course I play video games, there's nothing childish or immature about it all. I'm 30 years old, hold down a full-time job, own a house, and pay for everything I do on my own....if I want to play video games in my free time then thats my choice!

well if you are 20 and have no job or not in school you are already putting yourself behind. i guess you can work at 7/11 the rest of your life and play video games if that's what you really want to do

Here's a funny thing that happened a couple of Saturdays ago.

A, presumably, 50+ year old English Tutor is looking desperate in finding something to talk about the Viewing Section of the English Exam. He scrolls through rolls of images on his computer screen looking for topics to fill the empty silence of the classroom of late 16 to early 18 year olds. He then stops at what looks like it didn't sell well with its poorly illustrated video game poster which is titled The Jade Empire.

The enthusiastic aged old man explains the question - which revolved around how a target audience's ideologies are reflected in the text.

"Who's the target audience? Anyone?" Eyes scan each other's faces around the room of students looking too tired to listen to some old fart at such a pleasant Saturday morning.

The tutor breaks the silence - "Gamers! That's the audience! Now, some of you might be gamers and some might not be; I personally know people who play video games from a young age and get hooked on it, some I know are 30 years into it now." I respond with a nod of acknowledgement and interest.

I assume others were smirking because he then goes on, "Nothin' to laugh about! Some guys get hooked on video games for life and can't stop! They do nothing else with their lives."

"Did you know that 80% of high school achievers - those that receive school awards - are females? Young boys are now lost in their video games staring at their screens grunting, "Ooh! I've got to get those 5000 points!"" The old man's acting transforming him into some overweight, greasy and unhygienic man child.

My friend, who regularly plays League of Legends, soundlessly gasps besides me during the short pause of silence in the room.

"Now, I don't know about you but we can assume gamers have no ideology when it comes to the world. They're too busy mashing their controllers to think of anything important."

Scribbling the word, 'ageism' on my noteless notebook, I nudged my friend's elbow to catch his attention to it. He shakes his head in agreement.

You also have to be a virgin to still be playing video games as well, don't forget that part. Shenanigans aside, people actually think like that?

Jungled9/11/2015, 1:45:43 PM1 votes

I know what you mean. I've seen many players comment about age and gaming. But then I simply argue with the "shouldn't you be doing your school work". When they reply with something like, I'm done then I simply say then that's pretty much the same with adult life. You go to work and you try to reduce the amount of work you need to do at home. Whilst I personally still have work to do after hours since I still find free time to play League. I should be able to do anything I want in my free time. It's my free time. It's my leisure. Let me do what I want.

Kids seem to think that when you're an adult you have no time to play games. Well...you actually have more!!!
