im failing to see anything really other then people complaining about how his skills are similar to other champions (witch theres quite a few characters who share similarity in skills)

Just a guess, but I think a big contributing factor to people disliking him is that his visuals have changed so much
long and short, Giant Hulking Happy Collosus, instead of Dark Tragic Gargoyle. Both Magical Constructs, both meant to protect, the new one is way to massive and is completely different in every way from the original.
When Warwik was done, he was still basically a Werewolf visually When Fiora was done, a fencer duelist lady Poppy a little Yordle with a big hammer Taric started fabulous, made more fabulous. each one kept the theme intact, in this case the theme was butchered. He isnt a Gothic Gargoyle like creature any more, and they have even added a voice joke into it MAKING FUN of what he used to be and by essence everyone who liked what he used to be. I have said it elsewhere before, but honestly by making him a Collosus living rock guy I feel like he is a cousin of Malphite, the other giant rock guy (different personality to be sure, but cousins have different personalities from each other), and not Galio who was a Gothic Gargoyle thing, its one of those "not even the same species" any more things, it would have been like taking Poppy and going "there are no Yordles in demacia.... lets make her human"... in this case its "there could never have been a Gothic Gargoyle in all of Demacia's long history... watching over small churches or castles, i know lets make it bright and shiny and 40 stories tall no one likes Gothic Gargoyle's any way so lets just remove the only one we have from the game"
