Why do people do this?

Just some background on me, I was silver 5 last season, placed into bronze 5, and have had an extremely high win rate and am currently in bronze 2 and climbing. But I could be climbing a lot faster if it weren't for one thing, blind optimism. As high school athlete, after practice and homework daily I can get maybe 2 to 3 games a day if im lucky. Most of the time it is just 1. So we are 25 minutes into a game, down 2 inhibs and being more than doubled in kills. I am not here to rage and say I had bad teammates, Im not going to win every game and I understand that, but after the enemy team takes their third dragon and pick off two of us who were trying to steal it then head to baron, yet my surrender vote fails 1/4 followed up by "Jayce why are you so negative man we can still win this!" There was no coming back from this game and yet people still decide to sit there and just wait to lose? Is that really fun for people? So i patiently sat there for another 10-15 minutes fending off super minions and dieing, just waiting for them to end it. Is there a reason behind this blind optimism? Because I dont know about you but I would much rather just cut my losses and surrender a game like that, and have time for another one that I have a chance at winning.

I've posted about this elsewhere. It's a product of our culture and how we approach teaching today. The system doesn't teach failure and how to recognize when you just can't do something, so we have people who will throw themselves endlessly at the wall long after a wise man advises them to stop trying.

And the sad thing is that there is little you can do except be dragged along until the other team grants you the mercy of a defeat. I've been stuck in this situation myself and I agree its beyond frustrating, but it will happen simply because the people you are with lack the ability to recognize that the cause is lost. I'm not saying it's their fault. They are that way because they have been taught to be that way. And there is little you can do.

I'm guessing your experience as a high school athlete negates a lot of that. You are in a competitive sport where a winner is selected with each game/match, and are used to being able to recognize when a game is "over" even if there is still time on the clock. Just remember that many of the people playing LoL don't have that experience and ability.

I'm not sure what sport you've played that you surrender at any point no matter what the score, no one will ever teach you that.

sports for the most part don't, but if you watch much football, baseball or basketball you see games where the coach "empties the bench" and allows the reserves to play because the game is over. Those sports do not have a means of ending early at higher levels. (baseball and softball do have "mercy rules" at some levels where a big enough lead ends the game early.) However, there are signs and teams will basically start playing just to maintain their dignity while allowing the clock to run out. It is effectively a surrender.

I'm more of a tabletop/board game person and those games do have surrender options. Chess is the best example where a player can at any point concede that the match is loss. And in Chess it is an extreme violation of the game's honor code to keep playing if there is little chance of winning. It's considered an insult to the other player that you don't accept the defeat.

Honestly, the comments here of "if we get just one Ace, we can turn the game around." is to a point that same kind of insult. it comes down to, "if the other team commits too deep and we can make them pay for the mistake we can then push for the win while they are respawning." A good team is going to take care to prevent that kind of situation. I can understand that it does happen in bronze, but it shouldn't happen at higher elos unless the team getting wiped out loses map awareness and strategic focus somehow.

I play hockey In case that has any factor. We play in a very rough division and most games are blowouts. Usually a 4 goal lead is the nail in the coffin for any hockey game and that's when we throw in the freshman/sophomores to get them experience. So it pretty much just translates to a surrender unless everytime you go down 10 kills you have your little brother pick up the computer and develop him so he's better when he's older.

There is always a chance to comeback. There are hundreds of factors that go in to winning or losing a game. The thing that bothers me about people like you is that if you really are in an un-winnable game that you stand 0 chance of coming back, it will be over really fast and you get your wish of not wasting time. If the game does drag on you can win.

Am I the only one that actually enjoys the challenge of being behind? I've won 1000 games where I was or the team was fed, who cares, I outplayed or got lucky against my lane and stomped the rest of the game being 3 times as powerful as everyone else. The games I remember and tell my friends about are the games we win a 4v5 with an epic come back.

Please don't say "It will be over very fast" Bronze teams do not know how to end a game, I have sat in a 40 minute game that we were down by 15+ kills and two drags at the 20 minute mark, with an 0/13 top laner.
