League is not a very welcoming game.

I had a friend who tried to get into League so he could play with me and another friend. This guy is about as casual gamer as it gets. He plays for fun and never cares about ever getting super good no matter what game he plays. He just wants to chat with people and have a good time. He eventually gave up ad moved on. When I asked him why this is what he told me. He told me what I'm sure most of us thought when we started. "What is this?" "Why is this tower doing so much damage?" Stuff like that. However, what made him finally stop playing was the people he was playing with. He said he had never seen such hate towards other people for not doing well and this is coming from a guy who plays a lot of Call of Duty. The worst part about that is that there isn't much Riot can do help that. There is a mute button but that only goes so far. I truly feel for new players. On top of learning the game they also have to deal with smurfs who belittle them for doing poorly. New players that don't quit ether have thick skin, are lucky enough to not run into people like that or are truly insane.

The way it goes in League of Legends with casual gamers is very simple, either they quit or they become actual Gamers, not casual Gamers.

This Game is not meant for Casual Gamers, simply because of its competitive environment

If this guy really likes Mobas, I suggest him to start with something like Smite so he can ease his way into playing Games with a more ''Heated competitive environment.''

i got through early levels for 2 reasons:

  1. i have relatively thick skin but that wasn't the main reason.
  2. I was somewhat oblivious the it. or i was ignorant to the fact it was a problem. I was having too much fun screwing around in the game and learning new things to care.

League is not a casual game. It is one of the most complicated things I've ever played. It's like Chess + Basketball + Pokemon. You have to have strategy in real time while understanding how 100+ characters interact. It's not for everyone.

I can argue both sides.

On one hand, with regards to your friend, he's a mature adult. He decided that the game wasn't worth playing because of toxic jerks, and he left. That's life. Get over it. The game takes dedication to be anywhere close to good, and he didn't want to dedicate the time. That's not a bad thing, by itself. No reason to pitch a fit.

On the other hand, I do hate toxic jerks who flame. I am always happy to report them, and I hope they all end up banned eventually. It is wrong for them to treat your friend badly, and I feel for him.

Unfortunately, this is just the way it goes. If the game was that important to your friend, he would suck it up and play. It isn't important to him, so he didn't. If we could create a better environment for him to learn, that would be awesome. We just aren't quite there yet. Maybe sometime soon we will be. I hope.

That's always going to be a thing. Even when I first started and this almost towards the end of S1, I was being flamed for playing poorly in Beginner bots. I didn't even want to try intermediate because I was afraid of getting bashed into the ground. How I got through that? I became ignorant. I just played until finally I was competent enough to play Normals, I didn't care what anyone said, if a person attacked me in chat for sucking I ignored them and just went on.

What's sad is the game wasn't always that way. It has just been this way for almost its entire existence now. But, shortly after it was released... Well, I leveled to 30 without any kind of consistent flaming, afks, etc.

Then again, I am talking about a time when Xin Zhao was a brand new champion and fewer than a million people actively played the game so I can talk wistfully of the golden days with a lot more accuracy than the majority of the people who play the game.

(On a similar note, I was SUPER amused when people complained about the tank meta earlier this year. Compared to Meta-golem that shit was a joke. Then again, almost every "tank" meta since Meta-golem has been a total joke.)

Riot has stared that this game is not for the casual. Attitude aside from others(and he should not have to deal with it), he was not going to make it.

Most players do not talk in game since it takes away from the ability to play. I am not sure why you guys would ask someone to play with the attitude he has towards gaming. This is not a casual game where you fuck off and can just leave a game or rounds are 10 minutes long. League is a real time commitment.

So again i say he would not of lasted anyways.

play coop vs ai till you hit a point where you can play aram, then practice on aram as most of us don't care that much if you're learning

I agree with most of what's being said in the replies. I started playing in S2 after a friend convinced me to try it out. I have previously enjoyed casual games like Runescape and other online MMOs which have a semi-competitive aspect to them, guildwars, PVP etc. I know for a fact people trashed talked me to no end even in co-op. Since both me and my friend were new to the game we were able to just engulf one another in the game; we very much enjoyed the aspect of discovering new champions and elements in an exciting new game. League quickly became my favorite game to play. However, now a days when I attempt to bring in someone one new, it doesn't work out. I know too much and they too little, there is a disbalance. I advice just letting your friend try the game for himself, so he doesn't have to play to anyone's standards or be overwhelm, just let him figure it out for himself. If he likes the concept, he'll stick with it and slowly get better.

In my opinion league isn't a game were you can just bring in someone who doesn't understand MOBAs at all and expect to be able to play along side them anytime soon, even just for 'fun'. Just introduce them to the game and let them decide if its something they want to dedicate themselves to learn.

To be fair, there's not much you can do to make the transition process either.

MOBA's, by design, are just not very intuitive to a newer player. It's not easy to understand every single gameplay mechanic that is present in the game as a newer player, and everything in the game works together in a way that you need to understand most of these gameplay mechanics in order to know what is going on on a moment-by-moment basis.

League of Legends does its best to make newer players feel welcome, but at the end of the day it just isn't possible to make that transition process better, especially when you factor in toxic players.

Same thing happened with my cousin. Biggest thing was the minion aggro chunking her.

Problem was that a lot of the time she got the "random lvl 20-30" in her lane, so even in a mirror match the enemy starts inherently with more stats (clicking on the enemy at the start of the game became the 'can I win lane / not feed it' ritual, so that she wouldn't get her allies saying 'uninstall.'

She quit at lvl 15 with most of her matches after lvl 10 being 5-man teambuilder games with friends.

Why would you let him play against ppl pre 30? You should send him into vs SI matches.

If you are casual player LoL isn't for you. You need to learn wayyyy to much to have your fun with this game while getting smashed painfully from time to time without any chances in hell to beat your opponent. It isn't counter strike where you are using 3 weapons.

But vs bots this game is really casuall, nobody will harras you for going 1/20 or testing this hot ap ashe build. Jumping straight into matches in 5 yo game is as fun as starting new character in WoW and going into first harder instance almost all ppl know by heart while you dunno where to go.

I understand topic but ppl like your friend are kinda far away from players that like LoL.

I made a post some time ago about how toxic this community has and compared it to call of duty which is actually a decent community now a days. its pretty sad but yeah I totally agree, the game is not beginner friendly. but elo boosters are a bigger problem then how unforgiving the community is after all. We know where priorities lie.

Silents4297/28/2015, 3:34:23 PM1 votes

Yeah no, using that as a reason is stupid.

"Well I have this friend.."

Oh you do? Well god everyone drop everything he had a friend who couldn't get into the game, clearly the game is broken! RIOT! RIOT HELP!

Narasimha7/28/2015, 10:24:51 PM1 votes

League has gotten to the point where everyone assumes everyone else is a smurf. People forget that genuinely new people DO show up.

FebruAhri7/28/2015, 10:58:27 PM1 votes

All this talk about new player experiences, when I started playing nobody was flaming anyone, it wansn't until level 20-30 that people started taking the game seriously

JesterSummoner7/27/2015, 10:06:55 PM1 votes

Yeah I remember when I first played. In my opinion people haven't changed much. I just ignored them. I played bots for a while then I jumped to normal.

Not sure how many smurfs there were in 2012 though. It's a shame because we could use more casual players. Are you sure he won't try it again?

ElJanitorFrank7/27/2015, 10:58:22 PM1 votes

Well that was one big problem. He's a very casual gamer and you just threw him into a highly competitive game.
