I think most people are aware that Urgot is viable
He's just unpopular

I bought Urgot because I thought it would be fun to wreck people with a "trash" champ. Yeah he's not weak, maybe he's even strong, but he's just not very much fun to play. I'm not even sure why he's not, but he's not. Although it is still fun to mess with people using a champ like that which is rarely picked.
Some thoughts about maybe why he's not fun:

Q and E are skillshots that are poorly animated and feel awkward to use.

Lock-on mechanism on Q is also awkwardly implemented (unlike most other locked on ability shots which have the simple box over the opponent when you highlight them that you click to cast). Its hard to tell when you are locked on or not.

R is awkward to use and does you more harm than good unless you use it very smartly -- i.e. it's a noob trap, like Poppy ult;

a large part of what Urgot does to be successful (i.e. debuffs on opposing champs) is not visible, so feels unsatisfying.

he's slow and has laughably small aa range for a "ranged" champion, let alone a "marksman";
