Two options here.

Particles in the atmosphere spontaneously undergo nuclear fusion enough to produce several coins worth of precious metal. This causes a massive explosion, destroying the region (if not the planet).
Energy in the area gathers densely enough to become matter. Gathering that much energy in one location would destroy the reigon. If anything managed to survive that, there is almost no thermal energy left in the area. Everything flash freezes and dies.
