It's how the placement series works, at least on the first time. You can also invite Bronze/Gold players to Duo with you.

I never said the system wasn't fucked. I've gotten Silver III players when i was Platinum V. No, i wasn't on a losing streak..yet.

During and before S4 the matchmaking wasn't exactly amazing.

And for reference, i got Silver I with 6/10 Veigar Support. I had bad teammates but i pulled through because of Veigar being a nuke bot.

It really depends on how good your Normals MMR is. If a Challenger smurfs and raises his smurf's Normals MMR to a really high amount, then the player might be able to place above Gold. I think it becomes easier to do this when you have a prior ranked history, but my point still stands.

My favorite is when I see Gold 5 players talk shit to Silver 1 players, I think it's hilarious that they think there is any difference between the two. I'm Gold 2 myself and I personally don't think there is a difference between the 5th and 1st Division of any given Tier.

This happens in every elo. Silver players make fun of bronze players, gold players make fun of silver players, etc. It goes like that all the way up to challenger, except when you hit challenger you're fighting for numbers instead of divisions. The only person who is exempt from this is #1 in challenger, unless you consider NA one of the weaker regions. Then, people can only make fun of you for being #1 in NA.
