HexaDecimel2 votesI sided with the Quarians. They obviously made a huge mistake and have suffered greatly for it. I don't hate the Geth, but the reality is they are still AI. AI cannot encompass the same range of emotions and understanding. They are subject to extremely abstract thought processes and still pose a potential massive threat to the galaxy.
I am not against the idea of getting both sides to work together. But if forced to choose I fight for the side of the living.
Laughing Fish2 votesAh, but here is the thing: Despite the Geth's reputation of caring less for life, they had the ability to run the Quarians into extinction and chose not to. And yet, the Quarians tried to run the Geth into extinction the moment they had an opportunity. Plus, the Geth were willing to reveal their full strength and compromise in order to protect the galaxy from Reapers, while the Quarians were still stuck on getting their homeworld back (even though the Geth made it inhospitable to organic life).
And finally, as you say the Geth are a major threat. With the reapers on the way, humanity needed a big threat on its side.
HexaDecimel2 votesI just have an inherent distrust for AI or things along that line. Same reason that I tend to be anti-ghoul in Fallout. Humanity is on the brink, we have to deal with radioactive creatures, rad storms, irradiated food, super mutants, feral ghouls, and each other.
And here are a sub-species that live for hundreds of years, are no longer human, and feel resentment towards smooth skins. Humanity just doesn't need that on top of everything else.
Like I said, I have nothing against Geth, (I do think ghouls are gross and they are never getting any), but Tali zorah nar rayya is my bae, and I protect my bae's lol.
Laughing Fish2 votesExactly, humans come first. And what did the Quarians really offer us? They are spectacular engineers, but their technology still paled in comparison to the Reapers. They lacked numbers, and they were unwilling to compromise or negotiate. The Geth on the other hand, they could think faster, move faster, and reproduce faster than anything else, even the Reapers. They were organized, they were advanced, and their knowledge of the Reapers was arguably greater than even Shepard's. The potential power of the Geth is virtually limitless. But yeah, humans always come first, so the ghouls need to stay out of our way. I didn't hate the ghouls, but like ever other sub-species in fallout, they are always secondary to humans.
HexaDecimel2 votesI normally side with other races in fantasy as Humans are often seen as the ones that take over everything and enslave. Liked that in Skyrim I was given a reason the hate the elves and that they were painted as the bad guys.
Laughing Fish2 votesSee, I always side with humans. Even if those particular humans are evil, they won't live very long. Human lives are short, and the evil humans will be replaced eventually. There have been plenty of evil cultures in human history, but that hasn't prevented good cultures from rising up. The human species must live on at all costs.
But yeah, it is quite interesting that Skyrim both made Elves the bad guys, but also made them more powerful. Elves are normally some small, dying group of innocent creatures.

Laughing Fish2 votesFavorite Male Jedi is of course Yoda. The dude is a tiny badass. Favorite female Jedi is a bit trickier, as their weren't really any well developed female Jedi in the movies. Plenty during that time frame, but it was mostly just brief appearances in the actual movies. Going ONLY by the movies I would have to say Madame Jocasta Nu (The Librarian). Going by the time frame, however, I would have to say Ahsoka Tano.

Well number one is easy: Darth Sidious. He was brilliant, insanely powerful, and had a cackle that was just overflowing with gleeful hatred. No character in Star Wars had the same presence and intense, almost joyful hatred as Sidious. He was a monster, and he liked that.
Second, I would have to go with Darth Plagueis the Wise. He trained Sidious, and was a puppet master pulling the strings of the republic behind the scenes. He even was capable of creating life.
Third, Darth Bane. He had a strong understanding of the future and of reason. He created the Rule of 2, and defined the Sith Order that would continue for over a millennium.
Fourth, Darth Vader. Darth Vader may never have ruled the Sith Order, but very few individuals have ever shaped the entire galaxy like Vader did. As Anakin, he was one of the Jedi's best solider. He fought for the light and thrived, and fought for the dark and thrived.
Finally, fifth: Darth Maul. Sure, Maul is far weaker and has had far less of an effect as the before mentioned Sith. But he is a scrappy son of a bitch. He survived being cut in half, survived the clone wars, survived being captured by Sidious, survived the empire.... The dude just never stops.

HexaDecimel2 votesWell I won't be ranking them in any particular order, but...... I think that Sidious and Plagueis were the most powerful Sith Lords that ever were. And their actions had the best success against the jedi.
Bane and Reven are huge favourites of mine. Bane revolutionized the Sith Order. He was cunning, strong, and showed great power. Reven was a natural leader. he bounced around between the light and darkside but he is the most iconic character from the old republic.
I really liked Bane's apprentice Darth Zannah. She showed some amazing sith sorcery and managed to defeat Bane.
And my guilty pleasure is Darth Caedus, or Jacen Solo. He had plenty of flaws but I agreed with a lot of what he was trying to achieve. And he was super powerful. Being able to block a star ship blast with the force, using battle meditation, using the force from space to do a mind trick on someone who was on a planet. And he could take pain like no other. He even used shatter point to destroy mandalorian armor. I just really loved him.

Laughing Fish2 votesHmm, some fine choices. I almost included Reven, but he fell just short for me. I would say Plagueis is likely the most powerful Sith. Sidious, despite all his immense power, wasn't just dangerous for his use of the Dark Side. Sure, being powerful in the dark side allowed him to cloud the judgement of the Jedi so they couldn't stop him. But on top of being a brutally powerful Sith Lord, he was also a genius. He was creative, patient, and cunning. This is why he takes the number one place instead of Plagueis for me. Plagueis may be the more powerful Sith, but Sidious was a far more powerful man.
Darth Caedus is pretty cool, but alas he is no longer canon. Kylo Ren took his place. Kylo Ren would be in my top 5 easily, but he isn't technically a Sith. At least not yet.

In my opinion Reven actually achieved more then Bane ever did. Technically all Bane did was mine cortosis, train to become a sith, kill some people, trick the sith into wiping themselves out, then did his best to disappear and learn sith secrets. Yes he set the Sith on a path to victory over the Jedi, but over his life time he didn't achieve much.
Reven was a general in the Mandalorian Wars. He ventured in to deep space to pursue the sith. He returned with an invasion force and almost defeated the republic. He lost his memory and was retrained as a jedi. He defeated Malak, and destroyed the Star Forge. He then continued his fight against the Sith.
Laughing Fish1 votesWhat makes Bane so interesting is that he truly believed in the SIth way. Sidious was ultimately in it for the personal glory, Plagueis desired control, Vader was selfish and couldn't let things go. But Bane started something. He actually wanted to create a legacy that could go on forever. He knew he would die, his glory would die, maybe even his name would die. But the Sith could live on. Plus he had some epic quotes:
“Equality is a lie, a myth to appease the masses. Simply look around and you will see the lie for what it is! There are those with power, those with the strength and will to lead. And there are those meant to follow—those incapable of anything but servitude and a meager, worthless existence. Equality is a perversion of the natural order!”
And Kylo Ren is amazing. That much raw power combined with that much emotional instability. He is unpredictable, unreasonable, and destructive. All you can do is avoid him or kill him, peace is impossible. He might just kill you and your entire city because of he is angry about something his father said to him when he was 10.

Ah, see that is where I disagree. I do not think he was bad with a Lightsaber. He easily defeated every opponent he came across, except for Rey and Finn at the end. And during that fight, he was severely injured (Chewie's crossbow has thrown storm troopers across a room because of how hard it hits, and Kyle Ren absorbed the entire blow to the gut), and was in emotional turmoil (which, unlike a Sith, appeared to weaken him). And he still instantly knocked Rey unconscious. Finn (while not a force user, was still a very elite solider) then attacked him, and also lost the fight, but drained even more of his energy. Only then did Rey barely manage to defeat him, and she still didn't kill him.
And Supreme Leader Snoke is the one who ruined things for Luke. Kylo was just his instrument of destruction.
HexaDecimel2 votesNo I get all of that. I understand that he took a massive blow to the stomach. I just found him almost comical. He didn't really have a presence and he wasn't all that threatening. There was just something about him I didn't buy when watching the movie. And I just recently watched the movie again and I have more problems with it than I did the first time.
My first issue was the whole First Order and Resistance. Why couldn't they have just stuck with the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant. They could have focus the story on how the fighting has continued for 30 years, fighting over one planet after the next. And how suddenly the Imperials are winning because of a secret dark force and the emergence of Grand Admiral Thrawn or something.
It made no sense how the first order would have funded the construction of Starkiller Base. Funds had already been used to make two death stars, and the first one took almost 20 years. It would have made way more sense for the Imperials to discover Centerpoint Station. Not as big as a death star, but capable of firing long distances and ripping through fleets. The could have created a story and used more source material, showing the Imperials cripple a mobilizing republic fleet. I think that would have had more emotional impact rather then watching a much of planets I don't know or care about blow up.
A minor point that I don't care for was Kylo's name, Ben. Hated it. Would have preferred Jacen.
Captain Phasma was a completely wasted character. She should have taken the place of that famous "Traitor Stromtrooper", that fight would have been so epic. Maybe she would end up dying in that fight maybe not. But having her be the one to give up the codes for the shield was a terrible mistake. She could have been so much better.
Another thing I noticed was that I do not like JJ Abrams alien design. It didn't feel like star wars, if felt like star trek. I don't like everything that Lucas did but I have to admit I love his eye for alien design. I didn't care for the scene with the Rathtars. I felt they could have skipped it in favour of more back story or build up with the republic or Empire.
I didn't care for the whole, piece of a map thing. Or with R2-D2 being deactivated for no reason. It felt really sloppy and rushed. I like the idea about searching for luke, but felt it could have been done a lot better.
And I hated that the Millenium Falcon was on Jakku, it felt so forced. I would have preferred to see Rey and Finn escape on a junk ship and get stranded in space. Then have the Falcon show up with Han and Chewie, responding to Poe's distress signal. They would explain that he was likely dead and Han would take them to a base. Han and Leia should have still been together and she should not have been the general, just and influential presence.
I didn't mind the Cantina scene but hate the whole we found the old lightsaber that luke lost on Bespin.
Laughing Fish1 votesI think the main difference is that I wasn't very familiar with the EU post-empire. I didn't really have any expectations, so I wasn't really comparing it to anything. I do disagree about Kyle Ren's presence though. Sure, it certainly wasn't the cold relentlessness of Vader, or the maniacal hatred of Sidious, but he brought a feeling of unease with him. He is overly emotional, unhinged, and petty, like a tantruming child. Even if things went nearly perfect, the slightest little provocation could set him off. Even if he wasn't the strongest, at no point was anyone safe around him. Plus his sword and fighting style were badaass as hell. He fights like a medieval European knight, who are the most epic melee warriors in history.
Phasma was wasted, this I agree with wholeheartedly. Gwendoline Christie is an excellent actress, who could have been quite a force to be reckoned with. We can only hope they give her a better role in the next movie. The piece of the map thing wasn't the most creative plot idea. I think they were trying to be ultra safe, after how much people hated the Prologue trilogy. I think that is why the Millenium Falcon was on Jakku. They used the same ship with the same actor for Han Solo, to help bridge the gap to introducing a new pilot.
Whether or not Leia should have been General, I could take it or leave it. Despite the title of General, she didn't act like a general. Others appeared to do most the military planning, while she was an executive. Another title might have suited her more accurately.
Ok, it is possible the main reason I like Kylo Ren is just his amazing Lightsaber....

I agree that they were trying to be safe, but the result was that they copied New Hope. I was fine with the Falcon being in the movie. Just not the way it was introduced. The falcon could have shown up and saved them as they tried to escape jakku, and could have shown how awesome of a pilot Han was.
If I told you a story about a droid that got stranded on a desert planet with important information that the Empire was after. And a dark robed figure who was tracking them down. And a young person who lives on a desert planet who is also a great pilot and happens to be force sensitive. Who later goes to a cantina and is attacked by stormtroopers. And finally a big space battle that occurs, destroying a massive space station right before it powers up to destroy the rebels. What movie am I talking about. New Hope or Force Awakens?
Laughing Fish2 votesIt certainly had a lot of similarities to New Hope. I think that was kind of inevitable though. People went way overboard in their judgement of the Prologue Trilogy, and people were already worried about what Disney would do with Star Wars. For me, it had a certain poetry to it. Like even though it is new people in new locations, there is a rhythm to the galaxy that is repeating. I agree, it went overboard in its similarities to Episode 4, but overall I really liked the movie.
And I had no idea who Jacen Solo was until AFTER I saw the movie, so for me Kylo Ren was completely new.

I was discussing the original trilogy with my wife again, and I find it mostly inoffensive. They aren't good movies, sure, and they really messed up Vader's character with Anakin's portrayal. Those points I agree with. But I also think the Prologue added some backstory to the world that was interesting, and that makes me appreciate them, even if they aren't as good as they could have been.
Same with Force Awakens. You can always make improvements to a movie with unlimited time and unlimited budget. But they did a pretty damn good job considering that they don't have that. I mean, remember that the editing for a movie like that takes forever. It's hard to tell, while filming, if they end result is going to be any good. It's hard to gauge emotional impact and flow without all the pieces there. And if there's a problem after you're done, you can't just start filming again; that time is past.
So I'm much more forgiving with established sci-fi franchises when it comes to this sort of thing. They did aight. The original trilogy will always be the best, and that's okay.
SirHeavyScrotum1 votesI think you're right that Jacen Solo was a better character, but the thing is Jacen Solo's character was developed over the course of TONS of books! Imagine if they tried to develop the character of Jacen Solo in one movie? The movie would 1) probably be filled with tons of plot holes, and 2) be entirely about that one character. They were trying to introduce four entirely new main characters, and tell a story at the same time. The thing about the new Star Wars movies is that you won't be able to compare them to the EU because the EU was simply a larger piece of work at this time than the new movies are and probably ever will be.
That being said, it did draw a lot of inspiration from A New Hope, I would have liked a more unique story.
SirHeavyScrotum2 votesOn top of that, Rey only did so with the help of the Force. It was pretty obviously guiding her in the final fight, as she went from incompetent in melee combat to a duelist. In addition, I think Kylo was toying with them a little at the beginning of the fight, he didn't seem to concerned with finishing them when he had the chance, or with turning his back on either of them. There were a lot of unnecessary flourishes and stuff in his fighting, even in his wounded state his cockiness was apparent. And at the end when he had her pushed to the edge of the cliff rather than just kick her off ala Leonidus, he stopped and tried to convince her to be his apprentice, which gave her time to tap into the force. I don't think Ren is a bad lightsaberist at all, but rather was toying with them while in a wounded state after winning a duel against both of them previously and he didn't have either the conviction or the where-with-all or the brains to finish either of them when he had a chance.
