He can actually choose either form, he just has a lockout timer (around 2 and a half minutes, possibly reduced based on the melee to ranged difference) on the form he gathered less of.
Going against 6 ranged bots I could still pick the Darkin form 2 and a half minutes after I unlocked the form change. When I went against a mix I think the timer was shorter though I don't remember for sure.
