The correct mentality would be to accept that everyone is a friend and an enemy at the same time. Any animal can be your family, and any animal can also be your food on the plate.

That's the opposite of what the message was. Everyone was saying they couldn't be friends but at the end they remained friends. Over coming the stereotypical boundaries. But you have to remember one thing, it was very informative about how racism is spread. The two of them, before any outside inference, were great friends. Then everyone told them how bad the other were just because they were "different". They grew resentment for each other, because it was taught to them, not because they actually experienced it. By the end of the movie they realized they were right from the beginning. If I'm not mistaken they had to "pretend" they hated each other at the end of the movie, because "society" wasn't ready to except them yet.

You missed part of the message.

Society wouldn't let it happen because of the times they were in. The message was no matter what they would be friends and nothing would change that.

But in terms of hanging out like they used to, they can't because Tod would get shot. Copper is excepted to be a hunting dog and he has to in order to live.

I get what you are saying but there i a reality message in that movie and it's why it is tied for my favorite or second favorite Disney movie. My only complaint about it is I wish it was darker at moments, like Cooper's friend Chef dying in the movie instead of a broken leg.
