NA Backbone ISP Maintenance - Ping Increase and possible DC's in the South/Southwest US

Hey all,

Whoa...deja vu! Round 2! Level 3, a major ISP backbone, is performing major maintenance once again near Chicago, IL starting on June 17th 10:00PM PDT and completing sometime the following morning. The maintenance will be very similar to the last where they’ll be cutting one of their main fiber optic lines to alter its path. This also means that the Riot Direct Network is going to be hit hard. We’re going to proactively re-route player connections that go through impacted areas slightly before Level 3’s maintenance at 9:30PM PDT to offset the impact of their work.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If you're in the Dallas area, your ping during this time may rise as you’ll be off the Riot Direct Network. We don’t expect it to increase drastically, but you may want to factor this in when you decide to play!
  • If you’re in Southern California, Arizona, or the general Southwest your connection will probably be taking a slightly longer path via Northern California during this window. You’ll also see a slightly higher ping time while we have these paths out of service.

As we did before, once the maintenance by Level 3 is complete, we’ll check everything out on our end to make sure it looks stable. If everything is glowing a bright green, we’ll re-route players back onto our Direct Network.

We’ll provide updates as we get them!

Well I am from Washington State and my ping has increased a lot. My fps will drop and the MS will jump upto as high as 2000. I have a new pc with a core i5 and 12 gigs of ram. My game play has been fine up until 4 days ago. for the last 4 days the lag spikes and ping have been unplayable. This makes me very sad since I have put in a lot of time and effort into my game play. not to mention all of the money I have spent on RP since I have been playing. I hope someone can fix the problem. Thank you.

Off topic(I think, this has been around for a lot longer than your maintenance rounds), a couple months ago I went from 67 ping to 73, its not major but I can definitely feel the difference(not nearly as big of a difference as 30 ping to 60 but still), also when I ping DIRECTLY to your server im closer to 60 ping that 67. Any reason behind this ~20 ping discrepancy between a direct ping and live?

Guess i won't be playing LoL anymore till this is fixxed kinda stupid when you get kicked outta game due to servers sucking

I guess it's an OKAY fix, but why not fix things by bringing back solo queue instead?

Mine is so random. I could go 4 games without lagging at all. Then out of no where have crazy flucuations in lag like never before. not to mention delay of like 4 seconds of commands. its unplayable in ranked. been happening for 4 weeks now. Im almost rdy to say f it and quit. Cant rank up with shit happening like this. Please fix asap.

What exactly is the purpose of these ISP maintenances? I've never actually known what it's for.

you know, i'm curious as to what will happen to all this infrastructure should this game ever die off. Will it get sold off to internet companies and will they use it to hopefully transfer data more efficiently? Or will it fall into disuse?

Okay thanks for the update!

I'm not sure if this is related or it's my laptop, but I've been having random 30 second-1 minute and a half long crashes for the last 2 days. Yesterday I also had two bugsplats in the loading screen. I haven't been having ANY other problems recently. I haven't been having any FPS or Ping issues. In the crashes, I can still hear the background music. It doesn't seem to be triggered by anything in particular. I've had them during death, about to place a ward and before death. I'm in Nova Scotia :p
