She is reliant on attack speed, her E (flame breath mark) and her burnout for damage. She relies on her ult's passive armor/mr and her speed from her W for defense.

Her weaknesses are her lack of cc and that her damage falls off severely late game as most fighters' damage does. She is weak to armor shredding and kiting. Abuse the fact she is melee and you should be fine.

Edit: And also keep in mind she actually does a high amount of magic AND physical damage, as her W and E proc's are her main damage points for magic and her Q is a double aa (auto-attack) equivalent.

She was just nerfed, so I wouldn't count on her receiving another one anytime soon, though they may do a numbers tweak. The best advice is to try to put pressure on the lane and gank when her ultimate is down so she doesn't have that extra utility and escape. CC is also a good resource when trying to fight Shyvana. Might want to look into some MR or a way to sustain through the damage that she can put out. Like the rest of the damage dealing top laners that also can tank (Rene, Trundle, Mundo) it's pretty difficult to deal with Shyvana without committing resources.

As far as playing her, itemization really depends on lane matchup (or if you're in the jungle) but due to her percent damage in her kit you really only need to build some health and get tanky to do a great job. I'd recommend a Sunfire, Randuins, Tabi/Merc Treads focus. Possibly get a Wit's End if they are heavy on AP or a Thornmail if they are heavy on AD. Jungle item I'd recommend a Lizard Elder and Mobi Boots.

Apply slow or hard CC and kill her from range. Most of her damage comes from her sunfire cape and her burnout skill, so if you don't stand next to her you won't die. (Of course she will be trying to get next to you, which is why you need to speed yourself up or slow her down or both.)

Also Shyvana was just nerfed, I wouldn't expect another nerf soon.

She's on my buy list too. I played her almost exclusively the week she was free. :)
