From what I understand, MMR is an invisible point system, like ELO. You cant see your MMR unless you go to some third party websites. League points are what gets you to divisons. So lets say your silver 4, you need to gain 100 LP and win a best of 3 series to move up to silver 3, so on and so forth. Going from silver to gold its a best of 5 series. From personal experience, your MMR dictates how much LP you get. For example when I hit 30 and qualified I was placed in silver 4. After which I went on a mad losing streak and dropped to silver 5. After coming out of my hot losing streak, I was at the bottom of the barrel in silver 5. Now here's where MMR comes into play. When I lost so much, my invisible MMR dropped. Now when I win games I get 10 LP and if I lose a game I lose about 25 LP, so its very hard to climb. This is because my MMR says I should b in bronze somewhere, but I cant drop to bronze unless i go inactive. So as a result I need to win way more games than I lose, to bring my MMR up to par with silver players.

Hope that helps!
