Then again, this isn't really news any more? We already have a canonically gay couple whose orientation is now vital to their story.
And the the fact that it's because when she transforms she feels better remaining as the same sex kinda undermines the idea of it being representation. It might as well state that it's because there's something strange about her that she swings that way.
I don 't think that's the case... My theory is since Neeko is of course female, she is much more comfortable transforming into female champs. I bet the majority of everyone here can relate if they transformed into the opposite gender they might feel a little freaked out.
