Pike is not a support? (Support Main)

The newest champion to hit the rift (ATTOW) is Pyke Pyke another psychopathic serial killer with a slightly different lore than Jihn. But Riot has done something very interesting... they've already defined his position pre-release? They claim he's a dmg support but looking at his kit, and as a support main myself, I don't know if he'll fill the role Riot intended.

  • Passive: His passive Gift of the Drowned Ones gives him health regen if not seen by enemies. When I first saw this I thought it SCREAMED jngler but the passive stipulates that the health regen dmg must have been done by an enemy champion. This is an important stipulation because if his passive also works with dmg from monsters and minions he's definitely going the way of filling the jngler role, and given that he has no AOE dmg other than his ult... his position as a jngler may be hard to fill. But I also think this passive may be good for Top laners because of its natural sustain.

  • Q&E ability: The Bone Skewer & Phantom Underway are great CC abilities for your ADC, and Jngler when there trying to gank your lane. I actually like these. I favor any type of CC abilities as a support player myself.

  • W&R ability: His W ability Ghost Water Dive gives him the power to go stealth and gain movement speed at a decaying rate. I was confused by this ability and how it complimented the support role? When I first read this I immediately thought this favored the jngler role more because along with his R-Ult Death from Above it has massive gank potential and stealing camps may be fairly easy; HOWEVER, a stipulation of his R-ult is that the assist shares in the kill gold making his R-ult ability favor more the support role. Also, his W ability may be good for roaming as counter-jngling & warding is a prevalent responsibility of the support player.

Verdict? I definitely think people will try to use him in various roles because I believe Riot has surely challenged people by already defining his role pre-release, which is something I don't believe they've ever done. Their policy was always to avoid defining roles for champions. But IMO I think Riot has carefully worked this champs abilities out to eventually favor the support player. I think a high dmg support is a long time coming. Supports, I can already tell you, are frustrated because if our team sucks we can't carry a game. So hopefully other mains will stay away from this champ and let us supports shine, for goddamn once<3

I think his passive really works well with bot lane as it has a lot of bushes. If a bush is unwarded, the support or adc will have to ward it to prevent Pyke’s passive from activating. This is where his Q comes in handy as he can use it to pull enemies towards him and use his E which also works with flash to guarantee a stun and kill.

Mid is definitely not a good place for Pyke to be because he doesn’t really have a form of poke besides his Q. He’ll also be outranged by the mages and will be really squishy in lane. If he wants his passive to go off, he has to walk out of lane to do so. If his jungler ganks him often, it’ll be all good because he’s good at setting up kills (I think).

Top, I’m not so sure about because I don’t play that lane.

Jungle might be the worst lane for him to be in. His passive only activated against champion damage, and his clear is horrible. His ganks might be good, but everything else? It’s a no.

So final verdict? Support is the best land for him because he can set up kills for his ADC and his ult gives his adcgold and executes the enemy. Although, you have to remember that there’s Janna also.

I don't think defining the role is something they have never done before. Ivern This guy for example was clearly designed as a jungler. If he doesn't jungle, then he has basically no passive.

Xayah Rakan They are obviously designed as a duo bot lane.

So I think it is not a new phenomenon.

Pike

Pyke*

But going back to the topic, I think he will be good against Enchanter squishy supports.

unless you go full ap rengar doesnt have as much aoe and if his passive works on all enemies then he def jg also if you ward while costantly poking him he basically dead and he doesnt have a lot of health because his health equals ad idk the conversion but if he not getting alot of health then he better off topif he has alot of ad then he gonna die way to quick in support against things like soraka brand ezrealeven jhin cause of his w

Considering his initiation chain might as well be copy pasted from Thresh, yeah.

People were fairly doubtful of Thresh actually being a support at first too.

He's fairly similar to Bounty Hunter in DotA in that he's essentially a stealthy roamer that can grant allies some extra gold.

And Bounty Hunter is played as a support sometimes (they call it Position 4 in DotA), so I'd wager he can definitely function as a kill oriented support.

I mean, blitzcrank doesn't scream "support" (especially considering he was supposedly designed for top lane) but he's always played as a support and does a fine job destroying luggage supports. I don't know why people are so quick to make judgments and start theory crafting. Just wait for it to come out and play it, then you can form an opinion

All I'm saying is I don't think Riot should have a say in what lane their champ is supposed to be in. Like, yes Nocturne is a Jungle, but his kit works top and what not. Pyke's damage feels so negligible alone. Much like Leona. A champion with a Kit that COULD be useful anywhere, but because of his low damage scaling and bases really, (For leona's case the same thing but also her passive being teamwork only.) The support role is still the most "niche" role. Imagine my excitement too, "A new assassin in league?! The man has a Dagger and looks like the underwater/shuriman single dagger rogue of my dreams, but he's a serial killer that needs fuckin help to do anything? What the fuck lmao. His saving grace though is that you really do play him like a Saber Toothed Blenny having to dart around the big grouper you fight in solo lanes, taking bites out of him and keeping him confused with your dance.

When I say support is a "Niche" Role I mean it's got the hardest time being used other places, though jungle could arguably be just as strict on it's "Role Forcing"

He has a whole bunch of CC and that's enough for him to be a support.
