Why is it Legend of Zelda?

Rather than Legend of Link? I've always been confused about that, specifically. Considering the main protagonist of most of the games is Link, and you barely play as Zelda (if ever).

Similarly, in the Mario games, It's called Mario rather than Peach, although similarly to Legend of Zelda games, you're saving Princess Peach.

cause she's the central goal and focus of the games in the older format, with her being locked in crystals and stuff.

Zelda is the end goal.

In Zelda games, a lot of what happens is -because- of Zelda, and it's up to Link to go fix everything. She's a descendant of Hylia (previously just the goddesses, but SS gave her a name), and Ganondorf wants her power to become immortal / all powerful / whatever his motive is at the time. So, while Link is the main character and the window through which we play the game, he's not the driving force behind everything like Zelda is.

In Mario games, Mario is the driving force behind a lot of it all. Bowser gets jealous of Mario, kidnaps Peach, then Mario goes and kicks his ass and makes him salty and all that.

In Metroid games, the driving force? You guessed it, the Metroids.

Because the "legend" is a tale retold of the princess, who is the embodiment of a goddess and is reborn to bring light to Hyrule. Link is the reborn hero in the legends, who either saves the princess or assists her in taking down Ganon.

It's like Sleeping Beauty. The title of the story/movie is about the girl, and not about the hero that conquers the evil required to save her.

Because more often than not, Zelda is the focal point of everything happening in the story. She is the most important character to the narrative. And from Ocarina onward, the other most important thing to the story is usually whatever is in the subtitle. Ocarina of Time, the ocarina is a central part of the game. Twilight Princess, Midna is the main driving force directing your actions, etc., etc.

Some of them make no sense, like Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening, since Zelda has no part in the story. But at that point it's just branding.

No one remembers the soldier whose duty it was to save the princess.

A good example is Glen from Chrono Trigger (save the queen, in this case).

it should be the legend of link. Link is the hero who does everything fights all the monsters kills the boss saves the princess. Zelda doesn't do diddly
