Wait, how is vision score calculated?
Just finished a game where Mao placed more wards, destroyed more wards, and bought more pinks than the Soraka, yet the Soraka had higher vision score..

Probably considers how long they spot enemy champions too.
perhaps vision score takes into account the positioning and placement such as did you ward your red initially when your jungler went blue? did you ward their blue? did you throw some wards in the jungle to help your ally ? did you place a few wards in lane? did someone teleport to your ward? maybe all of that helps.
