QUESTION: What do *you* think a supports role is?

Red Mage FTS·5/5/2019, 8:41:30 PM·1 votes·1,682 views

Last few days its become painfully more evident in my games that people who don't spend time in support in my ELOs don't actually know what the role is for.

I hear things like - Fiddles not a support, or don't poke with Zyra save all mana for peels, to you need to body block every skill shot regardless of if your ADC could take it or you will die (feed to potentially save ADC vs only giving them one kill).

So, I am honestly curious what you think a support role is?

In here, the only info I personally am looking for is this:

What do you think a supps job is? (The bulk of what I am looking for) Who do you supp as? (If your not a supp main and get autofilled) Whats your main role? (I am curious what a sololaner thinks a supp is vs a JG vs a ADC) What ELO/Rank are your highest accounts? (This is so I can have some perspective and see if its different in different ELOs)

Any further conversation I would LOVE to see, champ choices/vies ect.

Also feel free to put this where it is supposed to be, I am not sure if this is the best board.

elo/rank: none.

what i think a sup is: a player you share lane with. they are showing kindness by helping you in lane so it is only fair you show that same kindness back. they are not your meat shield, they are not your tether, and they are certainly not a blame magnet for your poor playing. if they take 1 or 2 cs then it is important not to flame them cause they can straight up leave you. they are in no way forced to help you (even if they called it) and have every right to leave you if they think you aren't being grateful.

who i think a sup champ is: any champ can be a sup if played right. but typical sups include: Blitzcrank Brand Pyke TahmKench Lux Lulu Braum Zilean

a sups job: to help anyone that they feel needs it. (not just bot lane). and no, the jg is not a sup either.

main role: roam.

A support, in my opinion, is there just to help snowball your adc, and to keep the other adc from getting ahead. I always try to save my support from a "death skillshot" if I need to, but I wont sacrifice myself if my adc will stay alive as well. I am always playing around my adc (unless theyre actually just bad and dont know what theyre doing, in that case Ill find the carry and support them... after laning phase of course) and I am always trying to stay one step ahead of the enemy team to predict ganks and objectives and stuff like that. Also, VISION WINS GAMES. I always buy control wards when I recall. It only helps.

My supports are Rakan, Leona, and Nami. Im currently silver 3. I want to become a support main but I currently play mid with Kat and Ekko (I find that I can't carry my team as support, so I try to carry my team as a midlaner. Hence the reason why I say I "want" to become a support main. I think it's more fun than mid but I cant control the game as well. Unless my adc hard carries of course, which is an amazing feeling).

It would take too long to describe a Support's job to people who don't already know. There are 1000's of things that are situational based on 1000's of other conditions. A generic statement like, "Help the ADC" is vastly incorrect when it stands on it's own. Also, it isn't just your elo.

If you are a Support Main, you climb more consistently if you disregard the ADC and pick "Support" champions who can deal the damage that you can't trust your teammates to deal for you no matter how much you enable them. Even Aphromoo.... When he isn't just practicing champions, he prefers to pick things like Lux and build full damage if he JUST WANTS TO WIN. He even SAYS it during streams when he admits that he can't trust his team.

Playing the Support role "correctly" is actually the wrong way to do it if you want to climb optimally. Zyra and Fiddlesticks are actually decent champions for our elos if you want to increase your chances of winning. Vel'koz, Lux, and Morgana are pretty good too. Brand is a classic, but his early game isn't too strong. If you make it out of early game consistently though, then he is one of the best high health killers. Often times you might get stuck with an Ezreal ADC whose damage is absolute trash vs 3 bruisers or tanks. You can make up for the damage that your teammates lack.

Supports do a lot. Generally their main job unless they're a carry support like Zyra or Brand is to enhance their carry's ability to carry. How depends on the type of support. Whether it be engage, peel, or heals/shields. They also take care of part of map control via vision control. Everyone should be warding, but supports usually do more of it.

Main role: supp/mid

A support's job should be as an enabler to the rest of the group. Dealing damage isn't the primary purpose and never should be.

I typically play Morgana support but can also play Sona support.

My main role is ADC, and I get lots of practice flexing my play around different support types.

Currently in Silver 2 but I'm at least Gold quality.

I realize most players simply want to be the huge numbers DPS, and I've seen it since my WoW days. However, there's still players who find a satisfaction in being a walking meat shield that goes "no, you don't touch him until you get through me" or being a healer that goes "yeah, keep trying to hurt him. I'll outpace you all day." However, that's still not the full scope of supports as there's also allied buffing and enemy debuffing; both of which are primarily support functions.

I don't like how nuke support has become a thing. It feels like a degradation of the role because it's so reliant on damage first. It takes away from "this is teamwork effort" and instead goes "I can't trust you to do the job, so I'll do it".

Currently it is to protect and enhance a ADC or to be a second APC.

I really hope it it change to protecting an enhancing team mates.

What do you think a supps job is? (The bulk of what I am looking for)

Supp's job is to help his teammates, mainly dmg dealers. In what way will you help them depends from a champion you play and the situation-

Who do you supp as? (If your not a supp main and get autofilled)

Janna, Karma and Brand.

What ELO/Rank are your highest accounts? (This is so I can have some perspective and see if its different in different ELOs)

Atm s1, g4 highest.
