Time to take a break from League

First off I guess I should say I've had ridiculous amounts of fun with league over the years. And anyone reason this is probably going to look up my match history and say. Well crap man, your playing champs that don't really work in their roles. Yup this is true, I have champs I like to play, and they don't always fit in the meta.

So I realize we all have losing streaks or really bad games. But over the past couple of weeks, I probably have one 'fun' game in every 10 games. And I'm talking about the games where teammates are fun, they chat, they laugh at your mistakes, they laugh at their own mistakes. You do well, or you fight to the end in a losing game. Or they want to try out the new beemo skin. Whatever.

The problem is, 1/10 games being fun means that 9/10 of the games extremely frustrating. I don't think there's one specific reason. For example, there are always afks, or a rqs, intentional feeders or chat/ping spammers. I don't really played ranked that much, and it seems like even normals are ridiculously competitive and serious.

When did League stop being a video game and start being a way of life or religious rite? I know the community has always been regarded as a toxic community (the most toxic?), but it feels like its 300x worse than it was when I first started playing. Is anyone being punished anymore, is there any reformed success stories? I honestly can't point to the last time I signed off for the day/night having had enjoyed the time playing.

I was introduced into league by a group of friends, now I am the only one of that group that plays. I can't introduce new people to league, because the learning curve is so high. There are new patches every week that completely change the game. And there are new champions that are complete game changers. The game feels like it's in a state where its developers are desperately trying to retain attention and making dramatic decisions whilst the community crucifies each of its members.

Normally I just say, whew, that was a stretch of bad games. But it feels like its been a month of bad games, a year of annoying champion releases, worse balance changes, and jaw-dropping toxicity. Maybe this is normal and healthy, but whew.... Its time to take a break.

3 Month Update:

Don't know why I am so invested in this game. But still following esports, and game state discussions. I've sufficiently detoxified/calmed from the player base, but still don't want to play. My current reasons for not jumping into game are

  • Wish Riot would stop updating their game. Players have a mindset that Riot has to fix their problems, rather than figuring out how to beat problems.
  • Game doesn't even mildly look fun to play. Waiting for preseason? Bugs everywhere, damage ridiculously high, only few valid playstyles/champions.

Regarding the toxicity. Been playing other (hereby unnamed) online games. Easily 20x more toxic players in league.

Some thoughts on solutions. Expand PBE (a lloooooot). Bring back tribunal ( I think ), players voting on and participating in reformation of other players, track statistics on time to death.
