The State of Riot

I'm starting to think that Riot is just losing their drive, their passion, their motivation to work and make the game as great as it can possibly be. They no longer seem to be working towards a great game that is fun for all people to play, no matter which role you're in. They seem to be only concerned with flashy LC$ plays, as evidenced by the bias in balance and the greenlighting given for the monstrous champions Akali and Irelia.

But perhaps it's not the end of the world. Maybe it's not all of Riot that's losing its zeal, maybe it's just some of the people. It's entirely possible that the balance team doesn't actually like what they're doing, but it's an order from higher up that they can't refuse. If this is the case, and it's from shareholders that just want more money, then I would ask that someone (or a group of someones) let them know that the best way to make sales for this game is to make it actually fun to play, where you have to work for every kill and tower instead of one shotting someone.

Riot seems to be starting to hear us, with the preseason tower changes, but I guess that they still don't get that we want Summoner's Rift gameplay to be more slow-paced and strategic. I understand you may not have a choice, or that your vision of the game may have changed, but please, communicate with us more. We love the game, we really do, and that exact reason is why so many people are so harsh with their criticisms. Some people may be harsh, or rude, but it's due to a combination of frustration due to you largely ignoring your community on your own gameplay boards, and the fact that this highly-snowbally version of league where you can get one kill and then just keep getting kills can be really stressful for some people. We don't actually hate you, it's like when a child says they hate their parents because they weren't given a toy or some ice cream. Please Riot, I am literally begging you, I don't want to see this game die, so please communicate with more of your community more often, and be more transparent. I don't want to see this game die, I really enjoy playing the game sometimes, and I cherish the memories I've made with my friends. But I don't want it all to be gone. I think you need to remember what made you famous in the first place, it's time to go back to your roots.

Seriously... you’re thinking you are somehow qualified to preach about how the balance team is just “following orders” from “higher up”, and that their vision has changed?

Change takes time unless you want the game to get even more broken. It is as if you have a delicately placed ball at the top of a hill sloping in all directions. Even the smallest perturbation can cause the ball to start rolling down the hill uncontrollably and irrevocably. It is for this reason that Riot must make changes cautiously, slowly, and conservatively to ensure that they do not result in a more broken game.

Lastly, I want to point out that the Boards and reddit have proven time and time again to not be valid indicators of community opinion as a whole. Both platforms serve as a sort of ‘echo chamber’ where players regurgitate the vocal minority opinion to feel as if it is actually a majority. There are many, many instances where the boards/reddit have latched on an idea as the “majority” of players, but in reality Riot surveys show it’s well less than 50%.
