Also vehicles are scary, if I didn't have to drive in order to commute (and if alternatives were safer, RIP bicycling on the shoulder next to 40 MPH traffic) I would find an alternative.

People get so used to it that they never consider the mass and momentum that they are responsible for controlling. It terrifies and infuriates me to no end every time I see somebody looking at their phone instead of the road in front of them. That additional split second it takes them to look up and react to something can be the difference between a safe me-on-a-bike and a flattened me-on-a-bike.
